Vlivem blízké evoluční příbuznosti člověka a ostatních lidoopů dochází ke vzájemnému sdílení mnoha infekčních onemocnění. S rostoucím kontaktem mezi těmito hostitelskými druhy roste rovněž riziko přenosu patogenů oběma směry, což může mít vážné důsledky jak pro ochranu divoce žijících lidoopů, tak pro veřejné zdraví. Due to their close phylogenetic relationship, humans and other great apes share susceptibility to many infectious diseases. As the levels of contact between these host species increase, the risk of pathogen transmission in both directions becomes greater, which can have severe consequences for great ape conservation as well as public health.
