Emblematics in Baroque Preaching

Abstract:

Tato disertační práce se zabývá emblematikou v barokním kazatelství. Je představen žánr emblému, jeho vizuální i literární podoby v emblematických knihách a v barokních kázáních Karla Račína, Pavla Jozefa Axlara, Daniela Ignatia Nitsche, Bohumíra Hynka Josefa Bilovského, Fabiána Veselého a Antonína Jana Kelského, Ondřeje Františka Jakuba de Waldta. Naše disertační práce se dále věnuje studiu emblematických strukturních principů v barokní homiletice a popisu základních a reprezentativních emblematických forem. Hlavní emblematické formy - protoemblematická vyjádření a emblematické struktury textu - jsou prezentovány na konkrétních ukázkách z barokních postil v textové příloze. Protoemblematická vyjádření a emblematické struktury v barokních kázáních jsou literární výrazy, struktury a pasáže, které obsahují popisy obrazů či jiné obrazové prvky, jež jsou inspirovány dobovou barokní emblematikou a mohou být interpretovány podobně jako vizuální emblémy. Jako protoemblematická vyjádření jsme určili textové formy, které obsahují obrazný prvek, ale nemají emblematickou třídílnou strukturu. Emblematické struktury textu se naproti tomu v kazatelských textech skládají ze tří částí: krátkého motta (inscriptio), slovního popisu obrazu (pictura) a výkladové pasáže (subscriptio). Emblematika sehrála v barokním konceptuálním kazatelství významnou roli. Kromě emblematiky s moralistními motivy ctností a neřestí s důrazem na kajícnost, nápravu a obrácení hříšníků se v barokní homiletice setkáme také s emblémy tematizující duchovní témata, sv. Trojici, Ježíše Krista a Pannu Marii, včetně vnitřních prožitků víry a prohlubování duchovního života věřících. Studium emblematiky v kazatelství přináší nový pohled na konceptuální barokní kázání. Interpretace kazatelských textů na pozadí emblematických knih může přispět k hlubšímu porozumění některým literárním obrazům. Barokní kazatelé čerpali emblémy nejčastěji z emblematických knih, jejichž autory jsou Andrea Alciato, Philippo Picinelli, Jean Bollandus, Heinrich Engelgrave, Cesare Ripa či Joachim Camerarius.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with emblematics in baroque conceptual preaching. It introduces the genre of emblem, its visual and literary form in emblematic books and baroque conceptual preachings of Karel Račín, Pavel Jozef Axlar, Daniel Ignatius Nitsch, Bohumír Hynek Josef Bilovský, Fabián Veselý, Damascén Marek, Antonín Jan Kelský, Ondřej František Jakub de Waldt. This thesis also deals with the study of emblematic structural principles in baroque preachings and with the description of the basic and representative emblematic forms. Main emblematic forms ? protoemblematic expressions and emblematic structures in the text - are presented on particular samples from baroque postillas in the text appendix. Protoemblematic expressions and emblematic structures in baroque preachings are literary expressions, structures and excerpts, which contains the descriptions of paintings or other visual elements, which are inspired with the baroque emblematics and can be interpreted the same as visual emblems. We have determined as protoemblematic expressions the text forms which contain a visual element, but have not got the emblematic three-part structure. Emblematic structures of the text consist of three parts in the preaching texts: a short motto (inscriptio), a verbal description of painting (pictura) and an explanatory excerpt (subscriptio). Emblematics played the important role in the baroque conceptual preachings. Apart from emblematics with moralistic motives of virtues and vices with the stress on penitence, atonement and reversion of the sinners, we also meet in baroque preaching the emblems with spiritual themes: holy Trinity, Jesus Christ and Virgin Mary including inner experiences of the faith and deepening of spiritual lives of the believers. The study of emblematics in preachings brings a new view of conceptual baroque preachings. The interpretation of the ecclesiastical texts on the background of the emblematic books can contribute to a deeper understanding of some literary images. Baroque preachers drew on most often their emblems from the emblematic books. The authors of those books are Andrea Alciato, Philippo Picinelli, Jean Bollandus, Heinrich Engelgrave, Cesare Ripa and Joachim Camerarius.
