Preparation of perspective nanolaminates by magnetron sputtering and their characterisation

Abstract:

This work deals with the preparation and subsequent diagnosis of thin W-B-C thin films. These thin films are deposited by magnetron sputtering from three targets. The effect of their composition and the deposition parameters on the structure and properties of the thin films is investigated. The composition of the thin films is determined using energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry. The crystal structure is measured using X-ray diffractometry. Nanoindentation is used to determine mechanical properties such as hardness and elastic modulus. Main emphasis is placed on the tribological properties of the thin films. The influence of the load, the composition, the deposition temperature and the counterpart material on the coefficient of friction and wear is examined. Furthermore, the influence of the measuring temperature on the tribological properties of the thin films is investigated during high temperature tests. It was found that the deposition temperature and the measuring temperature had the greatest influence on the properties of the thin films. Thin films prepared at elevated temperature of 500°C show higher hardness than the thin films prepared without heating. These thin films also show significantly lower wear and better adhesion in tribological measurements. The coefficient of friction decreases with increasing temperature of the substrate during measurement. Film composition measurements after high temperature tests have shown that this decrease is due to the formation of W-O Magnéli phases, which act as a solid state lubricant.

Abstract:

Táto práca sa zaoberá prípravou a následnou diagnostikou tenkých W-B-C vrstiev. Tieto vrstvy sú deponované pomocou magnetrónového naprašovania z troch terčov. Je skúmaný vplyv zloženia a depozičných parametrov na štruktúru a vlastnosti vrstiev. Pomocou energiovo disperznej röntgenovej spektrometrie je skúmané zloženie vrstiev a pomocou röntgenovej difraktometrie je skúmaná kryštálová štruktúra. Na určenie mechanických vlastností ako tvrdosť a modul pružnosti bola použitá nanoindentácia. Veľký dôraz sa v práci kladie na tribologické vlastnosti vrstiev. Je skúmaný vplyv záťaže, zloženia vrstiev, depozičnej teploty a materiálu trecieho telieska na koeficient trenia a opotrebenie vrstvy. Ďalej je počas vysokoteplotných testov skúmaný vplyv teploty merania na tribologické vlastnosti vrstiev. Počas meraní bolo zistené, že najväčší vplyv na vlastnosti vrstiev má depozičná teplota a teplota merania. Vrstvy pripravené pri zvýšenej teplote 500°C vykazovali vyššiu tvrdosť ako vrstvy pripravené bez vyhrievania. Tieto vrstvy pri tribologických meraniach taktiež vykazujú výrazne nižšie opotrebenie a lepšiu adhéziu. So zvyšujúcou teplotou substrátu pri meraní klesá koeficient trenia. Merania zloženia vrstvy po vysokoteplotných testoch dokázali, že tento pokles je spôsobený tvorbou W-O Magnéiho fáz, ktoré slúžia ako mazivo.
