Stereotypes and stereotyping as a subject of media literacy

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce identifikuje relevantní aspekty mediální gramotnosti v tématu stereotypů: porozumění stereotypům v médiích (roli médií při šíření stereotypů, příčinám a principům stereotypizace v médiích), porozumění pramenům stereotypů, jejich důsledkům a procesu odmítnutí předsudečnosti. Následně vysvětluje rizika výuky o stereotypech (bumerangový efekt) a její vhodné prostředky (dialog, dynamika forem, interaktivita, kritické myšlení, kontrastereotypy). Jako základní cíl mediální výchovy pro téma stereotypů definuje citlivé vedení k odmítání předsudečnosti a jako další cíle orientaci v tématu, schopnost identifikovat stereotyp v mediálním textu a vysvětlit jeho společenský kontext, poučeně s ním pracovat ve vlastním textu a chápat jej jako součást kultury a identity jedince. Analýza existujících modelových hodin o stereotypech v médiích ukazuje, že se většinou zaměřují na principy stereotypizace v médiích a její identifikaci, aniž by stereotypy zařazovaly do širšího sociálního kontextu. Vlastní návrh školního projektu (na 20 vyučovacích hodin) představuje studentům téma stereotypů v médiích komplexně. Na základě testovací výuky částí projektu jsem zjistila, že gymnaziálním studentům chybí elementární porozumění tomuto fenoménu a k jeho doplnění potřebují celostní pojetí tématu, praxi v identifikaci stereotypů, dostatek času pro osvojení tématu a flexibilitu učitele. Učitelům nabízí stereotypy jako téma mediální výchovy prostor, ve kterém mohou studentům pomoci lépe porozumět médiím, společnosti i jim samotným.

Abstract:

This thesis identifies aspects of media literacy which are relevant in the subject of stereotypes: understanding stereotypes in media (specifically the role of media in the conception and spreading of stereotypes in society, causes and principles of stereotyping in media), understanding the sources of stereotypes, their impacts, and the process of rejecting prejudice. Subsequently, it explains the risks of stereotypes education (boomerang effect) and appropriate tools for such education (dialogue, dynamic forms, interactivity, critical thinking, counterstereotypes). It defines the primary goal of media literacy in the subject of stereotyping as sensitive guidance towards rejection of prejudice; additional goals are orientation in the subject, the ability to identify stereotype in media content and to explain its social context, to work with it well in original text and to understand it as a part of culture and identity of an individual. An analysis of existing pilot lessons about stereotypes has shown that they focus mainly on the principles of stereotyping in media and their identification, without putting stereotypes in the larger social context. I propose an original school project (20 lessons) which introduces the subject of stereotypes in media comprehensively. Based on experience gained teaching a part of the project I have found out that high school students lack elementary understanding of this phenomenon and to understand it they require a holistic approach of the subject, practice in identifying stereotypes in media content, enough time to get familiar with the topic and flexibility on the part of the teacher. The subject of stereotypes in media literacy offers a space where the teachers can help students better understand media, society and even themselves.
