Black Body on Czech Stage

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce je věnována tématu lidí tmavé barvy pleti s africkými kořeny na jevištích českých divadel. Všímá si stereotypů rolí, do kterých jsou afro-čeští herci a herečky obsazováni. Poukazuje na počátky africké přítomnosti v Evropě a zabývá se tím, jak je téma obrazu černého těla vnímáno v evropském kontextu, zvláště pak ve Velké Británii a Francii. Autorka také upozorňuje na fenomén blackface, který se na českých jevištích stále objevuje a navrhuje několik řešení tohoto problému. Jedním z nich je tzv. barvoslepé obsazení. Práce zkoumá české divadelní prostředí zejména pomocí rozhovorů s českými herci a herečkami afrického původu a na základě osobní zkušenosti autorky. Podstatnou částí je i vhled českých divadelních režisérů, kteří se zmiňovanými herci spolupracují. Tato bakalářská práce by měla ukázat nejen historický a současný stav dané problematiky, ale měla by pomoci divákům i tvůrcům uvědomit si, že na české herce a herečky afrického původu může být nahlíženo i jinak než pouze optikou rasové odlišnosti.

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis is devoted to the topic of dark-skinned people of African descent on stages of Czech theaters. It notices the stereotype of the roles in which Afro-Czech actors and actresses are cast. It points out the beginnings of the African presence in Europe and it carries out how the topic of the image of the black body is perceived in European context, especially in Great Britain and France. The author also draws attention to the phenomenon of blackface, which still appears on Czech stages, and proposes several solutions to this problem. One of them is the so-called color-blind casting. The work examines the Czech theatrical environment mainly through interviews with Czech actors and actresses of African origin and based on the author's personal experience. An essential part is also the insight of Czech theater directors who collaborate with the mentioned actors. This bachelor's thesis should not only show the historical and current state of the issue, but should help the audience members and creators to realize that Czech actors and actresses of African descent can be viewed in other ways than just through the lens of racial difference.
