Green is the colour of Islam: Islamic environmental ethics and its practice

Abstract:

Tato práce pohlíží na islám skrze environmentálně-etickou perspektivu. Dokazuje, že podle islámské věrouky člověk není pánem stvoření, ale je jeho správcem (chalífou) s morální odpovědností. Právo využívat přírodu je podmíněno plněním povinnosti pečovat o ni. Příroda není pouze materiální zdroj, ale má smysl i nezávisle na člověku: modlí se k Bohu, oslavuje jej, odráží jeho kvality, dokonale se mu oddává – je příkladem pro člověka. Nemá-li chalífa ve svém úkolu nadále selhávat, musí uplatnit etiku v praktickém životě: promýšlet důsledky svých činů rozumem, aktivně předcházet (environmentálním) škodám a rázně napravovat ty již vzniklé, očišťovat svůj charakter od (environmentálně degradačních) vášní a svodů. Uplatnění teoretické etiky v praxi státních a nestátních subjektů ukazuji na příkladech Íránu, Saúdské Arábie, Pákistánu a Velké Británie. Vyjadřuji přesvědčení, že prameny islámu jsou schopny nabídnout „zelenou“ etiku, a ochranu přírody lze tedy chápat jako náboženskou povinnost každého muslima.

Abstract:

The thesis asks: Is there anything like Islamic environmental ethics that could enable Muslims to protect environment with a religious motivation? I believe Islam offers enough “green” values and ethical principles that can be viewed in an integrated ethical system. Man is not a master of the creation but its vicegerent (khalifah) whose rights to use the nature (to make his living) come only if his duties to care for it have been fulfilled. Nature is not just a material source but it has more reasons of existence, often independent of the humans´ needs. It praises God, reflects his attributes, surrender its will fully to God and thus becomes a perfect Muslim, an example for humans and a means to learn about the Creator. But a theoretical ethics is not enough if it is not followed by a sound action. Men should use their reason, consider all the effects of their activities and avoid those environmentally degradable, and actively intervene to solve the problems already caused. I use few examples to illustrate such practical applications in the governmental and NGOs sector of Iran, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Great Britain.
