Meteorological records of František Jan Vavák from Milčice in the 1770-1816 period

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce analyzuje teplotní a srážkové poměry středočeské obce Milčice v období 1770–1816 na základě záznamů o počasí a příbuzných jevech v Pamětech sedláka a rychtáře Františka Jana Vaváka (1741–1816), vydaných edičně v letech 1907–1938 a 2009. Klimatologická analýza se opírá o rozbor podrobných a shrnujících zápisů o počasí se zřetelem na použitou terminologii (teplota vzduchu, srážky, oblačnost atd.) sdruženou do tzv. indikátorů teplotních a srážkových poměrů, dále na proměnlivé množství záznamů a kontextuální informace. Vlastní zpracování vychází z interpretace měsíčních (sedmistupňová škála od –3 do 3) a sezonních (škála od –9 do 9) teplotních a srážkových indexů z analyzovaných Vavákových zápisů. Vedle nich je použit také složený index daný součtem absolutních hodnot sezonních teplotních a srážkových indexů. Klimatologická analýza je doplněna poznatky o zjištěných povětrnostních singularitách. Interpretované měsíční a sezonní teplotní a srážkové indexy jsou z důvodu verifikace porovnány s indexy odvozenými z přístrojových měření na stanici Praha-Klementinum v období 1775–1816 pro teplotu vzduchu a v období 1804–1816 pro srážky. Zjištěné rozdíly souvisejí především s kvalitou a hustotou Vavákových záznamů a jejich subjektivní interpretací. Předložená práce je příspěvkem k poznání klimatu českých zemí na přelomu 18. a 19. století na základě využití dokumentárních pramenů.

Abstract:

The Bc. thesis analyses temperature and precipitation patterns of the Milčice village (Central Bohemia) in the 1770–1816 period, based on records of weather and related phenomena included in the memoires (Paměti) of peasant and reeve František Jan Vavák (1771–1816), editorially issued in the years 1907–1938 and 2009. Climatological analysis is based on the investigation of detailed and summary reports on the weather in view of the terminology used (air temperature, precipitation, cloudiness etc.), associated into the so-called indicators of temperature and precipitation conditions, varying numbers of records and contextual information. Subsequent climatological interpretation of the Vavák’s records leads to the derivation of monthly (a seven-point scale from -3 to 3) and seasonal (scale from –9 to 9) temperature and precipitation indices. Further composite indices (created as a sum of seasonal temperature and precipitation indices in absolute values) are used for description of climatic patterns. The image of the climate is complemented by involving of weather singularities. The interpreted monthly and seasonal temperature and precipitation indices are further compared with the indices derived from the instrumental measurements at the Prague-Klementinum station in the 1775–1816 period for air temperature and in the 1804–1816 period for precipitation. The observed differences are related mainly to the quality and density of Vavák‘s records and to their subjective interpretation. This work contributes to the better understanding of the climate of the Czech Lands at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries based on the use of documentary sources.
