The Image of the Jew in the Quebec Novel

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the question of the intercultural relations, the search for identity and the place of immigrants in the Canadian society, and it is particularly focused on the immigrants of the Jewish origin. Firstly, the history of immigration and multiculturalism in Canada in general are presented; afterwards, the present study focuses on the history of the Jews settled in this country. It is followed by the discussion of the way in which the phenomenon of the immigration, including the arrival of the Jews to Canada, is depicted in French-Canadian literature. One part of the thesis concentrates on the explanation of the terms “cultural identity”, “otherness” and “Jewishness/Judaism”, which play an important role in the thesis. The aim of the thesis is to depict the image of the Jew in the Quebec Novel through the analysis of the three works dealing with Jewish characters: Aaron by the Quebec author Yves Thériault, Alexandre Chenevert by the Franco-Manitoban writer Gabrielle Roy and L’Apprentissage de Duddy Kravitz by the Canadian-Jewish author Mordecai Richler. The crux of the thesis called “The Image of the Jew in the Quebec Novel” is formed by the themes such as the process of integration into the different society and the difficulties connected with it, the loss of the former identity, the influence of modernity and multiculturalism on the fortunes and behaviour of the Jewish immigrants.

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou mezikulturních vztahů, hledání identity a místa židovských imigrantů v kanadské společnosti. Nejprve seznamuje čtenáře s dějinami přistěhovalectví a multikulturalismu v Kanadě obecně, poté se zaměřuje na historii Židů usazených na tomto území. Následuje pojednání o tom, jak se fenomén migrace a s ním spojený příchod Židů odráží ve francouzsko-kanadské literatuře. Součástí práce je také vysvětlení pojmů “kulturní identita“, “jinakost“ a “židovství“, jež zde hrají důležitou roli. Cílem diplomové práce je zachytit obraz Žida v quebeckém románu, a to prostřednictvím analýzy tří děl, v nichž židovské postavy figurují: Aaron quebeckého autora Yvese Thériaulta, Alexandre Chenevert manitobské spisovatelky Gabrielle Roy a L’Apprentissage de Duddy Kravitz kanadsko-židovského autora Mordecaie Richlera. Diplomová práce s názvem “Obraz Žida v kanadském románu“ traktuje na pozadí literárních děl témata, jako jsou proces začlenění se do společnosti a problémy s ním spojené, ztráta původní identity, vliv modernity a multikulturalismu, a to vše ve spojitosti s komunitou židovských přistěhovalců.
