Ekphrasis: Laokoón and Dorian Gray. Limits of painting in literary descriptions.

Abstract:

Ekfráze je pojem často opomíjený jak v českých pracích, tak i v pracích zahraničních autorů. Nezbytnost rozšíření povědomí o ekfrázi, jako o součásti literatury, je velmi zjevná. Tato bakalářská práce se v první části zabývá popisem historie ekfráze jako pojmu a rétorické kategorie. Dále se soustředí na ekfrázi, jako na literární popis výtvarného díla, s důrazem na pojmenování literárních prostředků. Cílem práce je komparace ekfrází v Lessingově Laokoonu a Wildově Obrazu Doriana Graye.

Abstract:

Ekphrasis is a term very frequently neglected in thesis of Czech or even foreign authors. Necessity to raise awareness of ekphrasis as a part of literature is very apparent. The first part of this thesis shows ekphrasis in its historic background not only as genre but also as rhetorical category. Further it concentrates on ekphrasis as a description of fine art in prosaic text. Then the thesis focuses on appointing the literary mediums used while describing. The goal of this thesis is the comparison of eckphrasis in Laokoon, čili, O hranicích malířství a poezie, written by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing and Picture of Dorian Gray, written by Oscar Wilde.
