Top-level sport and authenticity: sport stars without media interest

Abstract:

Práce je zaměřena na problematiku konstrukce sportovních hvězd v prostředí vrcholového ale jen částečně medializovaného a profesionalizovaného sportu – bazénového plavání. Klade si otázku, zda hvězdy (známí a úspěšní sportovci) jsou přítomny i v tomto typu sportu, který často stojí mimo hlavní zájem sportovně-sociologických studií. Dále se zajímá o způsoby a dynamiku konstrukce těchto hvězd v pojetí samotných aktérů plaveckého sportu jako jednoho ze sportovních sub-polí. Proces konstrukce a postavení hvězd v malém sportu je na základě poznatků relevantní literatury porovnáván se způsobem utváření a reprezentace hvězd vrcholně profesionalizovaných a medializovaných sportů. Teoreticky je práce zakotvena v teorii symbolického kapitálu a sociálních polí Pierra Bourdieu doplněné o myšlenky Howarda S. Beckera. Dále čerpá z kulturně-sociologického studia sportovních hvězd a celebrit (G. Whannel, B. Smart, Ch. Rojek). Primární metodou sběru dat byly polostrukturované hloubkové rozhovory s aktéry sub-pole. Výsledky přinášejí pohled na proces ustavení a reprezentace sportovních hvězd jako držitelů akumulovaného sportovního kapitálu ve sledovaném poli. Jako zdroj tohoto typu symbolického kapitálu je představen koncept autenticity jako distinktivní vlastnosti sportovního pole. Je popisován význam hodnot přítomných v plaveckém sub-poli, které respondenti vnímají jako autentické, a jejich rekonstrukce v osobě plavců – hvězd. Zároveň práce svými výsledky přispívá k diskusi o autonomii sociálních polí v kontextu sportovní sociologie.

Abstract:

The objective of the thesis is the issue of sport stars construction in the scope of a top-level but only partially medialized and professionalized sport – swimming. It poses a question whether stars (well known and successful athletes) are present in this type of sport which often stands out of the mainstream interest of sports-sociological studies. It further investigates ways and dynamics of construction of these stars from the point of view of swimming sport actors (as one of the sports sub-fields). The process of sport stars construction and their position in a minor sport is compared with forming and representation of stars in top professionalized and medialized sports as described in relevant bibliography. The thesis is theoretically grounded in the Pierre Bourdieu's work on symbolic capital and social fields, supplemented by approach of Howard S. Becker. Further, it draws inspiration from cultural-sociological studies of sport stars and celebrities (G. Whannel, B. Smart, Ch. Rojek). Semi-structured in-depth interviews with sub-field actors were used as a primary data collection method. Results outline process of establishment and representation of sport stars as bearers of accumulated sport capital in the observed field. The concept of authenticity is introduced as a source of this type of symbolic capital and a distinctive feature of sport field. The meaning of values present in swimming sub-field is described as authentic as it is perceived by respondents as well as reconstructed in star swimmers' bodies. The study contributes to the discussion on autonomy of social fields in the context of sociology of sport.
