Photograph as a Historical Source. Photograph in the Process of Building a New, Socialist Reality.

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je prozkoumat možnosti fotografie v rámci historického diskursu. Vychází z předpokladu, že snímek může být zdrojem netriviálního poučení o minulé skutečnosti, což se snaží prokázat interpretací české socialisticko-realistické fotografie první poloviny padesátých let dvacátého století. To by však nebylo možné bez dostatečné teoretické průpravy, která je bezpodmínečnou součástí studie. Snímek je zde pojímán jako struktura, do jisté míry osobitý jazyk, který – i přes jeho předpokládanou transparenci – definují kódy, kulturní a formální schémata, a jež je proto nutně závislý na interpretaci. K lepšímu pochopení vnitřní složitosti fotografického snímku či série snímků přispívá využití estetické a uměleckohistorické metodologie a teorie obrazu. Na půdorysu specifické podoby vizuálních studií jsou pak představeny možnosti výkladu a využití fotografií v rámci historického výzkumu.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to explore the possibilities of photography in historical discourse. It is based on the assumption that the image can be a source of non-trivial lessons of past fact, which is trying to prove by the interpretation of the Czech socialist-realistic photographs of the first half of the fifties of the twentieth century. It would not be possible without sufficient theoretical grounding, which is unconditional part of the study. The photograph is conceived as a structure, to a certain degree a peculiar language, which is – despite its predicted transparency – defined by codes, cultural and formal schemes, and which is therefore necessarily dependent on interpretation. To better understanding of the internal complexity of the photographic image or a series of images are contributing aesthetic and art-historical methodology and theory of picture. On the background of the specific version of visual studies are then presented the possibilities of interpretation and application of photographs in historical research.
