Correlation Coefficient

Abstract:

Cílem práce je poskytnout náležitý popis korelačního koeficientu a jeho použití. Korelační koeficient je nástroj, který je často užíván v korelační analýze a který se používá k měření lineární závislosti dvou kvantitativních proměnných. V teoretické části této práce je popsán jednoduchý párový korelační koeficient, Spearmanův koeficient pořadové korelace, dílčí korelační koeficient a vícenásobný korelační koeficient. Dále je pojednáváno o intervalech spolehlivosti pro tyto korelační koeficienty a o jejich testování. Ačkoli je korelační koeficient nejčastěji používán v korelační analýze, tato práce se také zabývá dalšími statistickými metodami, ve kterých může být korelační koeficient použit. V praktické části je kladen důraz na užití korelačního koeficientu v příkladech. V těchto příkladech jsou použita umělá a reálná data, stejně tak jako data primární a sekundární. Pro výpočty jsou použity programy MS Excel, R a gretl.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to give a proper description of the correlation coeffient and its usage. The correlation coefficient is a tool which is often being used in the analysis of correlation. It measures linear relationship between two quantitative variables. In the theoretical part of this thesis the product-moment correlation coefficient, Spearman‘s rank-order correlation coefficient, the partial correlation coefficient and the multiple correlation coefficient are described. In addition the confidence intervals and the testing of correlation coefficients are discussed. However the correlation coefficient has its most common utilization in the analysis of correlation, this thesis also deals with other statistical methods, where using of the coefficient is suitable too. In the practical part the main focus is put on using of the correlation coefficients in examples. In the examples false and real data are used as well as primary and secondary data. The calculations are being made in MS Excel, R and gretl.
