Impact of the locus of control and expectancy factors on completion of a therapeutic programme in clients with medium-term treatment of alcohol addiction

Abstract:

Předmětem zkoumání předkládané diplomové práce jsou osobnostní charakteristiky, zejména jedna konkrétní, klientů odvykajících od alkoholu, léčících se ze závislosti v zařízení typu rezidenční léčby. Cílem je u jedince závislého na alkoholu popsat osobnostní charakteristiku locus of control a její dimenze a zjistit, zda se uplatňuje jako determinant v procesu předčasného spontánního ukončení (resp. dokončení) léčby klienta střednědobého, 3 – 4 měsíčního, léčebného programu alkoholové závislosti. Zároveň je práce zaměřena na detekování možné změny v charakteristice locus of control během léčby, k níž pravděpodobně vlivem terapeutického působení dochází. Jako důležité se dále jeví, zda pozitivní či negativní valence pacientova očekávání na počátku léčby, vztažená k interním nebo externím faktorům ovlivnění, má významný vliv na dokončení terapeutického programu. Výzkumný soubor představují pacienti oddělení léčby závislostí zdravotnického zařízení nemocničního typu. Výzkum je ve své podstatě kvantitativní, založen na formě pre-testu a post-testu. Pacientům byla administrována IPC škála Levensonové a škála čtyř výroků očekávání zkonstruovaná jako vlastní metoda. Teoretická část práce se zabývá léčbou závislostí, osobností závislého v léčbě a teoretickým ukotvením konceptu lokalizace kontroly. Výzkumy osobnosti a výzkumy zabývající se léčbou závislostí přinášejí důležité poznatky pro samotné terapeutické působení. Získání informací o pacientově osobnosti a hlubší pochopení s ní souvisejících souvztažností k různým způsobům jednání může přispět k urychlení nebo k zefektivnění psychoterapie a tím k celkové úzdravě klienta.

Abstract:

The subject of the research of the submitted thesis consists of personality characteristics – with one in particular – of the clients in alcohol addiction treatment in a residential-type facility. The objective is to describe at an alcohol-addicted individual the personality characteristic of the locus of control and its dimensions, and to find out whether it applies as a determinant in the process of premature spontaneous termination (or completion) of the client's treatment in a medium-term, 3- to 4-month, therapeutic programme of alcohol addiction. The thesis also focuses on the detection of a possible shift in the characteristic of the locus of control in course of the treatment, which is the most probably occurring due to the therapeutic activity. An important factor appears to be whether the positive or negative valency of the patient's expectancy in the beginning of the treatment, related to the internal or external factors of influencing, has a significant effect on the completion of the therapeutic programme. The group of the researched subjects is formed of patients of a department of the addictions treatment with a hospital-type healthcare facility. The research is in essence quantitative and is based on the technique of the pre-test and post-test. The patients were administered the Levenson's IPC scale and the scale of four notions of expectancy designed as the technique itself. The theoretical part of the thesis deals with treatment of addictions and with characteristics of the addicted person in therapy. The research of the personality and the research of the therapy of addictions bring significant findings for the therapeutic activity itself. Acquiring of information on the patient's personality and deeper understanding of the associated correlations with various types of behaviour may contribute to acceleration or efficiency improvement of psychotherapy and thus to the overall recovery of the client.
