Ecology and taxonomy of diatoms of Western Carpathian spring fens

Abstract:

Předkládaná disertační práce se zabývá ekologií a taxonomií rozsivek západokarpatských lučních pramenišť. Distribuci rozsivek zde ovlivňuje kompletní minerálně-trofický gradient, probíhající od kyselých, minerálně chudých přechodových rašelinišť po minerálně bohatá vápnitá pěnovcová slatiniště. Cílem bylo zjistit, zda a jak rozsivková společenstva reflektují jednotlivé ekologicko-vegetační typy pramenišť rozlišené podél tohoto gradientu. Rozsivky dominovaly v řasových společenstvech všech vzorků. Procento živých buněk bylo vždy alespoň 50 %. Celkem bylo nalezelo 188 taxonů, z toho jedna třetina náleží mezi vzácné a ohrožené druhy uvedené v Červené knize. Druhová bohatost rostla podél gradientu vápnitosti – od přechodových rašelinišť po vápnitá slatiniště. Na základě rozsivkových dat byla prameniště numericky klasifikována do stejných čtyř typů jako v případě vyšších rostlin a měkkýšů. Pro každý typ prameniště byly stanoveny indikační druhy. Hlavními faktory ovlivňujícími druhové složení rozsivkových společenstev byly pH a konduktivita. Dále byly zkoumány ekologické nároky různých skupin organismů (rozsivek, krytenek, vířníků) osidlujících stejný substrát (mechorosty). Zatímco u všech tří skupin s první osou korelovalo pH, konduktivita, obsah vápníku a dominance rašeliníků, s druhou osou korelovaly proměnné popisující charakter substrátu (např. struktura substrátu, obsah vody v mechorostu) pouze u rozsivek a krytenek. Čistý souhrnný vliv proměnných popisujících chemismus vody vysvětlil více variability v druhových datech rozsivek a vířníků, zatímco u krytenek převažoval čistý vliv charakteru substrátu. Data byla rovněž využita k analýze vlivu ekologických a prostorových faktorů na druhové složení společenstev různých taxonomických skupin (rozsivek, mechorostů, cévnatých rostlin a měkkýšů) s různou strategií šíření. Výsledky ukázaly, že společenstva mechorostů, tedy makroorganismů, jsou strukturována méně geograficky a více environmentálně než společenstva mikroskopických řas, a potvrdily tak, že neexistuje významný rozdíl v biogeografii mikro- a makroorganismů. V ekologických studiích je důležitá správná identifikace taxonů. K podrobnější taxonomické studii byly z několika problematických druhů nalezených na prameništích vybrány Gomphonema tergestinum a Reimeria sinuata s intermedierními jedinci, vykazující velkou morfologickou variabilitu. S pomocí geometrické morfometriky byly spolehlivě rozlišeny sympatrické populace obou druhů.

Abstract:

This dissertation deals with diatom ecology and taxonomy in Western Carpathian treeless spring fens. In these fens diatom distribution is influenced by the gradient of mineral richness spanning from acidic, mineral-poor transitional mires (poor fens) to extremely mineral-rich tufa forming fens (calcareous fens). The main goal was to find out if and how diatom assemblages reflect particular ecologically and vegetationally defined spring types distinguished along this gradient. Diatoms dominated in algal assemblages of all samples. The percentage of living diatom cells was always at least 50 %. Altogether 188 taxa were found, of which one third belong to rare and endangered species of the Red List. Species richness increased along the calcium gradient – from transitional mires to calcareous tufa fens. Based on diatom data spring fens were numerically classified into the same four types as when lassfied based on higher plants and molluscs. For each spring-fen type indicator species were revealed. Main factors influencing species composition of diatom assemblages appeared to be the pH and conductivity of springwater. Further, ecological demands of different groups of organisms (diatoms, testaceans, rotifers) inhabiting the same substrate (bryophyte tufts) were studied as well. Assemblages of all three groups displayed a very sharp major compositional gradient correlated with water pH and conductivity, calcium concentration and dominance of sphagna. While the second major directions in floristic variation of diatoms and testate amoebae were still well explained by measured factors such as substrate structure and water content, that of rotifers remained unexplained. When variations caused by substrate characteristics and water chemistry were partitioned out, testate amoebae were more controlled by substrate, while rotifers and diatoms by water chemistry. Diatom data were also used for analysing of the influence of ecological and spatial factors on species composition of assemblages of different taxonomic groups (diatoms, bryophytes, vascular plants and molluscs) with different dispersal modes. Results showed that assemblages of bryophytes, i.e. of macroorganisms, turned out to be less geographically and more environmentally structured than those of microscopic algae, and confirmed that there is no significant difference between microbial and macrobial biogeographies. In ecological studies correct identification of the taxa is important. From several problematic taxa found in the spring fens Gomphonema tergestinum and Reimeria sinuata and their transitional morphotypes, exhibiting broad morphological variability, were chosen for a detailed taxonomic study. Geometric morphometric methods provided reliable discrimination of sympatric populations of the both species.
