Interlaced agencies of Slovak care workers in Austria: a structure and agency approach

Abstract:

Slovenské opatrovateľky v Rakúsku žijú život v pohybe: neustále migrujú medzi svojim miestom domova a miestom práce, ktoré sa každé dva týždne stáva ich domovom. Kvalitatívnou analýzou deviatich rozhovorov so ženami, ktoré majú skúsenosť s touto prácou, som sa snažila pochopiť a interpretovať ich skúsenosť. Zaujímali ma tri úrovne problému: ako sa opatrovateľky vzťahujú k svojmu domovu? Aké vzťahy formujú v Rakúsku? A nakoniec, aké stratégie používajú, aby vyvážili tento neustály presun nielen medzi geografickými lokalitami a fyzickými domovmi, ale aj medzi sieťami vzťahov a sociálnymi pozíciami, s ktorými sú rôzne miesta spojené? Na otázky mi pomohla odpovedať teória štruktúra/agent Thomasa Lacroixa (2014) umožňujúca porozumieť skúsenosti transnacionálnych migrantov. Jej hlavné prvky sú dôraz na mnohosť sociálnych ukotvení aktéra, komunikatívny aspekt jednania a definícia sociálnej inštitúcie, ktorá je mediátorom medzi agentom a štruktúrou. Svojou prácou ukazujem podoby vzťahov, ktoré migrantky udržujú, pričom kladiem dôraz na prepojenosť ich jednania s inými aktérmi, a teda ich ukotvenosť v sieťach vzťahov.

Abstract:

Women working as care workers in Austria live a life on the move, oscillating between two home places. Using structure and agency approach of Thomas Lacroix (2014) grounded in transnationalist paradigm, I analysed interviews conducted with nine female care workers. Lacroix’ framework combines three elements. He views agents as embedded in multiple social fields, such multiplicity being the essential part of migratory experience. He uses the concept of communicative action of J. Habermas to stress the relational element of social actions. Finally, he views social institutions as the mediators between agent and (foreign) structures. Life on the move raises questions about how the multiplication of social fields connected to such lifestyle impacts on migrant’s current life and negotiation of social relationships. My analysis had three main concerns: woman’s relations to home, woman’s relationships in the workplace in Austria and strategies used by women to balance between their manifold positions. The used framework allowed me to analyse the actions of care workers in the wider context of social structure. The care workers’ agencies are interlaced with manifold other actors and cannot be viewed separately from the complex settings surrounding them.
