Transformation of Georgia under government of Eduard Shevardnadze with an emphasis on integrity of the country

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem mé práce je prozkoumat politická rozhodnutí Eduarda Ševardnadzeho vztahující se k zachování územní integrity Gruzie a jejich reálný vliv na regiony. Gruzie si v období vlády Eduarda Ševardnadzeho procházela velmi složitým obdobím politické, ekonomické i sociální transformace. Toto období představovalo pro Ševardnadzeho řadu politických výzev, a to jak vnitropolitických, tak zahraničních. Jednou z klíčových vnitropolitických výzev bylo zachování územní integrity Gruzie, tváří v tvář separatismu v regionech. Nejpalčivějšími otázkami konfliktu mezi Tbilisi a těmito regiony byla na jedné straně otázka uprchlíků a na druhé straně otázka politického statusu Abcházie a Jižní Osetie, kdy tyto dva separatistické regiony nechtěly v žádném případě slevit ze svých nároků na nezávislost. V Ševardnadzeho politice lze nalézt celou řadu deficitů, ovšem nemůžeme zapomínat na žalostnou situaci, ve které se Gruzie nacházela v době, kdy do jejího čela Ševardnadze nastoupil. Přesto to byl právě on, kdo dokázal položit základy dnešního gruzínského státu.

Abstract:

The main purpose of this thesis is to explore the political decisions of Eduard Shevardnadze related to maintaining the territorial integrity of Georgia and their real impact to the regions. Georgia in the period of Eduard Shevardnadze's government went through a very difficult period of political, economic and social transformation. This period represented many of Shevardnadze's political challenges, both national policy and foreign. One of the key challenges of national policy was maintaining the territorial integrity of Georgia, in the face of separatism in the regions. The most pressing issues of the conflict between Tbilisi and these regions were on one hand the question of refugees and on the other hand, the question of the political status of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, when these two separatist regions did not want to compromise on their demands for full independence. In Shevardnadze's policy can be found a wide range of deficits, but we can not forget the deplorable situation in which Georgia found itself at the time of the onset of Shevardnadze. Nevertheless it was he, who was able to lay the foundations for contemporary Georgian state.
