Tramping in memories of its participants

Abstract:

Anotace:Tato bakalářská práce se soustředí na tramping jako společenský fenomén a způsob sdružování a jeho projevy především v hmotné a sociální kultuře. Věnuje se inspiračním zdrojům této subkultury, kterými jsou dobrodružné romány a časopisy a jejich role v literatuře 30. a 40. let. Tramping má také svoje nadnárodní aspekty, kterými jsou migrace trampů do zahraničí a jejich mezinárodní setkání. Konkrétně se tato bakalářská práce věnuje trampské komunitě v okolí Brna, především poblíž řeky Oslavy a Bílého potoka a okrajově také dalším lokalitám, které zmíní narátoři ve svých vyprávěních.

Abstract:

Abstract: Tramping is a specific form of social gathering and leisure activity unique to the Czech republic and in part also to Slovakia. Its adherents always formed a specific subculture, often called a tramping movement, which focuses on backpacking and camping in nature most often in tents, cabins or cottages, but also simply under the open sky on a bedroll. It also features unique attributes, the most noticeable of which is their choice of outdoor gear that they use and clothing which they wear while outdoors. The most typical outfit of a tramp was composed of sport shoes or high boots, they wore trousers with firstly a suit jacket and later on, a shirt, often with a waistcoat. It was accompanied by a wide leather hat of the sort worn by cowboys. Cowboys and Indians of the Wild west were one of the primary inspirations of the tramping movement. Many tramps started hiking in nature to imitate cowboys, cattle ranchers and Indians they watched in movies and read about in novels by authors such as Zane Gray, James Oliver Curwood or Karl May as well in other media, for example serial novels which were published in magazines, most notably Rodokaps. These magazines were considered low-brow and lacking in artistic value and both in the 20s and 30s and later in the Communist period of Czechslovakia, there have been attempts to ban them, particularly by librarians´ bodies, which viewed themselves as responsible for educating the public. This thesis draws significantly from oral history gathered from interviews with contemporary Czech tramps, primarily associated with the area of southern Moravia, particularly the rivers Oslava and Jihlava. It also touches upon the subject of western riding, a sport based on the skills cowboys used to handle cattle at ranches, as well as the stories about tramps who immigrated into the USA and other parts of the Western world and regularly meet at the so-called global potlachs and smaller gatherings.
