Abstract:

Magisterská práce se zabývá fenoménem pražských filiálek amerických společností, které významně ovlivňovaly československou filmovou distribuci v první polovině 20. století. Od roku 1921 vznikaly v Praze přímé pobočky těchto společností – United Artists, Universal, Fox, MGM, Paramount a RKO. V první části se práce soustředí na působení a expanzi hollywoodského filmového průmyslu v Evropě a vznik těchto poboček v Československu. V další části práce, vzhledem k významnému vlivu státní protekcionistické politiky na filmový dovoz ve 30. letech, je proveden rozbor vztahu amerických dovozců a československého státu. Pro porozumění filmového obchodu pražských filiálek v Československu je analyzována jejich pozice na československém distribučním trhu a charakterizovány jejich typické obchodní postupy. V závěru je předložena komparativní studie dvou pražských filiálek, a to půjčovny Universal-film a MGM, které reprezentují společnosti z opačných pólů domácího trhu ve Spojených státech, což se také promítlo i na československém trhu. Tato magisterská práce přispívá do existujícího výzkumu československého filmového průmyslu první poloviny 20. století, analyzuje výrazný fenomén pražských filiálek hollywoodských společností United Artists, Universal, Fox, MGM, Paramount a RKO od začátku jejich působení až po jejich zánik a podává tak komplexní pohled na mezinárodní pozadí československé distribuce první poloviny 20. století.

Abstract:

The master thesis focuses on the phenomenon of the Prague branches of the American companies that significantly influenced Czechoslovak film distribution in the first half of the 20th century. The year 1921 marked the beginning of the boom of the Prague branches of these Hollywood companies - United Artists, Universal, Fox, MGM, Paramount and RKO. In the first part, the thesis focuses on the expansion of the Hollywood film industry in Europe and the establishment of the branches in Czechoslovakia. Due to the state protectionist policy that influenced film import in 1930’s, I offered the analysis of the relationship of the American distributors and Czechoslovak state. To understand the film business of the Prague branches in Czechoslovakia, I analyzed their position in the Czechoslovak film market and defined their typical business procedures. I also offered comparative study of the two Prague branches, Universal-film and MGM. As MGM and Universal represent the opposite sides of the Hollywood film industry in the United States, the case study thus shows sophisticated illustration of the functioning of these two Prague Hollywood branches in Czechoslovakia. The master thesis represents a contribution to the existing research of the Czechoslovak film industry in the first half of the 20th century. The broad phenomenon such as the Prague branches of the Hollywood companies, United Artists, Universal, Fox, MGM, Paramount and RKO was analyzed from its beginning to the end and thus offers an complex view on the international background of the Czechoslovak film distribution of the first half of the 20th century.
