V posledných rokoch sa zvyšuje dopyt po testovaní aplikácií internetu vecí. Testovanie týchto aplikácií nemôže prebiehať priamo na zariadeniach internetu vecí a je potrebné zvoliť iný spôsob testovania. PatrIoT rámec ponúka potrebné funkcie na testovanie distribuovaných aplikácií internetu vecí ako napríklad simuláciu sietí a emuláciu zariadení.
