Doctrine of Mahdism in Contemporary Iran

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the doctrine of Mahdism and aims at analyzing the official interpretation of the doctrine in contemporary Iran and at answering the question of how the traditional understanding of this doctrine has been changed over the last few decades. The first part presents the theoretical framework of the paper, above all the typologies of millennialism presented by C. Wessinger and R. Landes. The second part deals with the origins and development of shi’a Mahdism and the main attention is paid to the figure of the Twelfth Imam, his occultation and reappearance. The following part focuses on the doctrine of Mahdism in post-revolutionary Iran, its content and forms of its representation in the public space. The aim of the last part is to analyze, with the help of the selected theoretical concepts and typologies, the changes which have occurred in connection with this doctrine.

Abstract:

Diplomová práca sa zaoberá doktrínou mahdizmu a jej cieľom je analyzovať oficiálnu podobu tejto doktríny v súčasnom Iráne a zistiť, ako sa v priebehu posledných desaťročí zmenilo tradičné ponímanie tejto doktríny. Prvá časť približuje teoretické východiská práce, predovšetkým typológie milenializmu C. Wessingerovej a R. Landesa. Druhá časť sa venuje vzniku a vývoju ší'itskeho mahdizmu, pričom hlavná pozornosť je venovaná postave dvanásteho imáma a otázkam jeho skrytosti a návratu. Ďalšia časť sa zameriava na doktrínu mahdizmu v porevolučnom Iráne, na jej obsah a spôsoby, akými je prezentovaná vo verejnom priestore. Záverečná časť prepája vybrané teoretické koncepty a typológie s tradičnou a súčasnou podobou doktríny mahdizmu a analyzuje zmeny, ktoré v súvislosti s danou doktrínou nastali.
