Measurement of laser induced plasma fluorescence

Abstract:

In this bachelor thesis we are dedicated to measurement of the concentration of hydroxyl radicals in two plasma jets operating at atmospheric pressure in inner gas with assistance of laser-induced fluorescence (LIF). Further we are focusing on the measurement of the temperature of neutral gas in plasma on the plasma pencil by three different methods; LIF, Rayleigh scattering and optical emission spectroscopy (OES). On the plasma pencil at the flow of argon of 0,6slm ( standard liters per minute ) and generator power of 80W, the maximum concentration of OH radicals found near the tip of the discharge was 6.8*10^21 m^-3. On the surfatron, the maximum of concentration was near the tip of discharge and its concentration was 3.9*10^20 m^-3 at the generator power of 210W and flow of argon of 1.45slm. It was also demonstrated that addition of ambient air has a big impact on the creation of OH radicals. Regarding the measurement of temperature of neutral gas in plasma, by LIF we determined the biggest temperatures on the tip of discharge and the values of temperature were from approximately 650K at similar conditions as the above mentioned concentration measurement at the plasma pencil. By the method of temperature determination from Rayleigh scattering, the values of temperature at the equal conditions were by 100K lower in comparison with LIF, which was caused by the sensitivity of the method to the dustiness of environment where the measurement is done. Regarding the determination of temperature by OES method , on the other hand, we obtained the values of temperature by 100K grater, which was probably caused by the fact, that OH radical in excited state have very short lifetime for getting into rotational equilibrium while colliding with surrounding molecules. In every measurement, there is detailed description available about how the measurement was done and the explanation of the complication present during the experiment.

Abstract:

V tejto bakalárskej práci sa zaoberáme meraním koncentrácie hydroxylových radikálov v dvoch plazmových tryskách pracujúcich za atmosférického tlaku v inertnom plyne pomocou laserom indukovanej fluorescencie (LIF). Ďalej sa zaoberáme meraním teploty neutrálneho plynu v plazme na plazmovej ceruzke troma rôznymi metódami a to pomocou LIF, Rayleigho rozptylu a optickej emisnej spektroskopie (OES). Na plazmovej ceruzke pri prietoku argónu 0.6slm (štandardné litre za minútu) a výkone generátoru 80W bola maximálna koncentrácia OH radikálov nachádzajúca sa v blízkosti špičky výboja 6.8*10^21 m^-3. Na surfatrone bolo maximum koncentrácie v blízkosti špičky výboja a jej hodnota bola 3.9*10^20 m^-3 pri výkone generátoru 210W a prietoku argónu 1.45slm. Bolo taktiež preukázané, že primiešavajúci okolitý vzduch má veľkú rolu pri tvorbe OH radikálov. Čo sa týka merania teploty neutrálneho plynu v plazme, pri metóde LIF sme zistili najväčšie teploty v špičke výboja a hodnoty teploty sa pohybovali okolo 650K pri rovnakých podmienkach, pri akých bola meraná i vyššie spomenutá koncentrácia na plazmovej ceruzke. Metódou určenia teploty z Rayleigho rozptylu nám teploty oproti LIF pri rovnakých podmienkach vyšli okolo 100K nižšie, čo je spôsobené tým, že daná metóda je veľmi citlivá na prašnosť v miestnosti, v ktorej dané meranie prebiehalo. Pri metóde určenia teploty pomocou OES sme naopak dostali teplotu okolo 100K vyššie, čo je pravdepodobne spôsobené tým, že OH radikály v excitovanom stave majú príliš krátku dobu života na to, aby sa dostali do rotačnej rovnováhy pri zrážkach s okolitými molekulami. Pri každom meraní sa nachádza aj podrobný popis, ako meranie prebiehalo a vysvetlenie komplikácii, na ktoré sme počas experimentovania narazili.
