The Trabecular Bone Tissue of the Wrist Bones in Primates

Abstract:

This master thesis aims at questions related to the evolution of wrist bones, specifically whether reflect how the hand was used during the life of an individual and of the whole species. The central theme is the trabecular structure of the capitate, lunate, and scaphoid. The work is conceived as a comparative study, which uses a larger spectrum of extant primates demonstrating the use of hands during locomotion. The aims of the thesis are 1) test the assumption that variability in carpal bone trabecular structure correlates with locomotor type, regardless of the evolutionary trajectory of selected species, and 2) explore how the internal structure of the wrist bones differs among the selected taxa, especially with regards to differences in wrist size. We analysed trabecular structure in three carpal bones (capitate, lunate, scaphoid) in a sample of extant primates and H. sapiens relative to the dominant type of their locomotion. We used the Kruskal-Wallis test and pairwise comparisons post-hoc Mann-Whitney U tests for the statistical analysis. Our results suggest that suspensory taxa are associated with higher trabecular thickness and spacing than non-suspensory taxa, while quadrupedal taxa are associated with higher volume ratio, connectivity, and degree of anisotropy compared to non-quadrupedal taxa.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce směřuje k otázkám týkajícím se evoluce zápěstí. Konkrétněji si klade otázku, jestli kosti zápěstí odrážejí použití ruky na úrovni jedince a celého druhu během lokomoce či nikoli. Centrálním tématem je trámčitá struktura kosti hlavaté, poloměsíčité a kosti loďkovité. Práce je vedena jako komparativní studie, která využívá širší spektrum žijících primátů, kteří využívají ruku během lokomoce. Cíle práce jsou 1) testovat předpoklad, že variabilita trámčité struktury zápěstí koreluje s lokomočním modem bez ohledu na evoluční trajektorii primáta, a 2) prozkoumat vzorce vnitřní struktury zápěstí vybraných primátů, obzvláště pak v souvislosti s jejich odlišnou tělesnou hmotností. Analyzovali jsme tři kosti zápěstí na vzorku žijících primátů rozdělených do lokomočních skupin. Pro analýzy jsme použili Kruskal-Wallis test a Mann-Whitney U test.
