RSS channel structure proposal for MU IS selected applications

Abstract:

Cílem první části, tedy kapitol Popis RSS a RSS v praxi, je studium vývoje a struktury informačních kanálů RSS. V důsledku nejednotného vývoje známe několik specifikací. Mezi nejpoužívanější patří RSS 0.91 a RSS 2.0. Všechny však vycházejí ze společného základu, tedy z formátu XML. Za předchůdce RSS je možno považovat například služby Pointcast nebo CDF (kanály vyvinuté firmou Microsoft) známé z 90. let 20. století. Tyto produkty se ale nikdy neprosadily. Několik současných formátů naopak na RSS navazuje nebo ho rozšiřuje. Atom, Podcast a další technologie jsou v první kapitole taktéž zmíněny. Ve druhé kapitole je na příkladech z praxe ukázáno, jak se informační kanály reálně používají a jak se rozložení jednotlivých specifikací RSS vyvíjí na internetu. Kapitola RSS kanály a IS MU se věnuje možnostem využití RSS kanálů v Informačním systému Masarykovy univerzity (dále také IS MU). Postupně představuji jeho jednotlivé aplikace. U každé jsou vyjmenovány výhody i nevýhody – v případě, že se aplikace jeví jako vhodná pro RSS, je přiložen i návrh struktury daného kanálu. Zvláštní důraz je kladen na Vývěsky a Diskuzní fóra, která představují nejvhodnější prostředí pro využití informačních kanálů. Poslední část s názvem Navržená struktura a reálná data se věnuje realizaci převodníku XML archívů systému IS MU do ukázkových RSS struktur a hodnocení obsahu a využitelnosti celé práce v rámci IS MU. Představuji celkový pohled na hotové kanály a hodnotím jejich využitelnost. Zastavuji se také u otázky zabezpečení exportů. Existuje totiž nezanedbatelné množství uživatelů, kteří s kanály pracují a kteří si pořídili kvalitní software pro jejich pohodlné využívání. Proti nim však stojí velká skupina běžných uživatelů internetu, kteří o výhodách RSS netuší nic. Proto se v závěru práce objevuje i návrh na realizaci malé propagační akce, jejímž cílem je představit kanály širší uživatelské základně.

Abstract:

The goal of the first part of this thesis, namely the chapters RSS description and RSS in practise, is a study, based on the development and the structure of RSS informational channels. There are various specifications of RSS because of their non-uniform development. Among them, specifications RSS 0.91 and RSS 2.0 are the most popular, nevertheless they are all of the same - XML base. Pointcast and CDF applications (channels developed by Microsoft) are considered to be the predecessors of RSS technology. They were well-known in the 90s of the 20th century but were never used as much as RSS. However, some modern technologies derive from RSS and extend them. These are for example Atom and Podcast and other technologies which are mentioned in the first chapter, too. The second chapter is devoted to practical examples. It demonstrates how informational channels are used in practice and how the configuration of individual RSS acts on the internet. Possibilities of the usage of RSS channels within the informational system of Masaryk University (IS MU) are dealt with in the chapter called RSS and IS MU. I mention pros and cons of applications of IS MU as they are subsequently introduced. In case the application is suitable for RSS channel, the proposal of the particular RSS structure is designed. The applications Noticeboard and Discussion represent the most suitable environment for RSS use and that's why I put an emphasis on them. The last part of the thesis - The proposed structure and real dates - is devoted to XML converter. It converts XML archives from IS MU to the proposed exemplar RSS sructures. Then the contents and the efficiency of the whole work within IS MU is summed-up. I present a global view at the constructed channels and I evaluate their aplication. The security of RSS exports for IS MU is mentioned as well. There is a great number of users who are regularly using the RSS technology and who have bought a quality software to apply them comfortably. On the other hand there is the majority of common Internet users who have never heard about exports and their advantage. Therefore I plan a small promotion action in order to introduce RSS channels to a greater user base.
