Abstract:

Magisterská diplomová práce zkoumá raně moderní období v Anglii. Zaměřuje se na důležitost a využití paměti a zapomínání v tomto období. Práce řeší historické pozadí reformace. Stručně popisuje události od začátku reformace ve třicátých letech šestnáctého století až po konec vlády Alžběty I. a rozebírá její důsledky. Práce se zaměřuje se na vliv náboženských a politických změn na životy obyčejných lidí a zkoumá jak reformace ovlivnila jejich vzpomínky. Dále se práce zabývá pojmy paměť a zapomínání a řeší jejich význam v raně moderní Anglii. Práce zkoumá pokusy vládnoucí třídy ovlivňovat vzpomínky lidí a klade důraz na snahy reformátorů o potlačení vzpomínek společnosti na katolickou víru prostřednictvím zrušení očistce. Dále práce řeší úlohu divadla v raně moderní Anglii a zaměřuje se na vliv reformace na divadelní hry vytvořené v tomto období. Práce se pokouší demonstrovat, jak se změna náboženství a rozdíl mezi katolickou a protestantskou Anglií odráží v konkrétních divadelních hrách. Na hrách Williama Shakespeara Večer tříkrálový, Jindřich IV. a Hamlet je demonstrováno použití motivu paměti a zapomínání. Práce dále zkoumá způsoby, jakými tyto hry odrážejí události reformace.

Abstract:

This Master Diploma thesis examines the early modern period in England. It focuses on the importance and use of memory and forgetting in early modern England. The thesis deals with the historical background of the Reformation, describing briefly the events from its beginning in the 1530s to the end of the reign of Elizabeth I and discusses the consequences the Reformation caused. It focuses on the impact of the religious and political changes on ordinary people and their lives. The thesis further discusses the effects the Reformation had on the memories of people. It deals with the terms memory and forgetting in general, and focused on the significance of memory and forgetting in early modern England. It examines attempts of the ruling class to change the memories of the people. Attention is being paid mainly to the abolition of Purgatory as a tool to make people forget the Catholic faith. The thesis deals with the importance of the theatre in early modern England and focuses on the impact of the Reformation on theatre plays produced in the early modern period. It attempts to show how particular theatre plays reflect the change of the religion and how the difference between Catholic and Protestant England was visible in them. The thesis deals with William Shakespeare’s The Twelfth Night, Henry IV, and Hamlet to show how memory and forgetting were engaged in them and to discuss in what ways the plays reflected the events of the Reformation.
