Ancient gods of Teutons, Celts and Slavs; etymological analysis and comparison

Abstract:

This master´s diploma thesis deals with the etymological analysis of the names of Indoeuropean gods originating within Germanic, Celtic and Slavic tribes. Indoeuropean tribes share several similarities within their religious and mythological systems, therefore the thesis is focused on these categories: main god and goddess of the pantheon, war and agriculture functions, and gods of nature´s forces. Introduction chapters focus on the historical background, the origin, movement and language of Germanic, Celtic and Slavic tribes. Subsequently, the etymological analysis consists of a description of a particular god and its name´s analysis. The etymological analysis deals mainly with the name of the god, and other related names or place names. The intention is to introduce the names of the known but also long forgotten deities, describe their origin, semantic motivation and changes within the name throughout history.

Abstract:

Tato magisterská diplomová práce se věnuje etymologické analýze pojmenování božstev indoevropských společenstev Germánů, Keltů a Slovanů. Indoevropské kmeny sdílejí mnohé podobnosti ve svých náboženských a mytologických systémech a proto se tato práce zaobírá následujícími kategoriemi : hlavní mužské a ženské božstvo panteonu, vojnové a agrární funkce a božstva přírodních sil. Úvodní kapitoly tvoří historické pozadí práce, kde se věnujeme původu, pohybu a jazyku vybraných indoevropských kmenů. Za těmito kapitolami následuje etymologická analýza vybraných jmen, která pozůstává z analýzy jména a dalších pojmenovaní, které jsou od jména odvozené. Cílem téhle práce je představit jména známých i méně známých božstev, uvést jejich původ, sémantické motivace a změny jména v průběhu století.
