Intercultural distinctions in web presentations of the political parties in the United Kingdom and the Czech Republic

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on the linguistic analysis of web presentations of political parties of the United Kingdom and the Czech Republic. After outlining the theoretical background and methods, the political discourse, the speech act theory and the critical discourse analysis, the thesis analyses a corpus of texts about social affairs taken from websites of the Labour Party and the Czech Social Democratic Party. The analysis addresses differences between the texts, in their overall communicative purpose, modality and referential devices, which derive from dissimilarities on the political and social environment of both the countries. The Czech text is less persuasive and possesses a less amount of certainty than the British agenda.

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce je zaměřena na lingvistickou analýzu webových prezentací politických stran ve Spojeném království a České republice. Nejprve jsou nastíněna teoretická východiska a metodologie, zahrnující politický diskurz, teorii řečových aktů a metodu kritické diskurzivní analýzy. Poté následuje samotná analýza korpusu, který sestává z webových textů Labour Party a České strany sociálně demokratické týkajících se sociální politiky. Analýza pojmenovává rozdíly v celkovém komunikačním charakteru textu, modalitě a v užití referenčních výrazů. Tyto odlišnosti vyplývají z rozdílnosti politického i sociálního prostředí obou zemí. Hlavním rozdílem je nižší míra přesvědčivosti a jistoty českého textu na rozdíl od britského politického programu.
