Islam and social media in Indonesia and Malaysia

Abstract:

Sociální sítě se postupně staly nedílným nástrojem komunikace, sdílení informací a formování společenských názorů. Pro muslimské komunity napříč světem se staly rovněž nástrojem interakce, sdílení náboženských hodnot a vzájemného propojení. V této práci jsem se zaměřila na náboženský obsah v Malajsii a Indonésii. Za použití obsahové analýzy k rozboru příspěvků (postů) na Instagramu, jedné z nejpopulárnějších sítí v daných zemích, bylo vyhodnoceno na 7 568 příspěvků z celkových 20 zkoumaných profilů na síti Instagram. Následně byly výsledky z obou zemí vzájemně porovnány. Výsledky analýzy ukazují, že významná většina příspěvků spadala do edukační kategorie. Posty měly sledující vzdělávat v rámci islámu jako víry. Často pak byly tyto posty ve formě videí z míst, kde se vzdělávací akce odehrály. Zároveň pak fotografie sloužily jako pozvánky na další vzdělávací semináře. Co se obsahu týče, představitelé islámu se v Malajsii zaměřovali zejména na Korán a jeho interpretace, zatímco ti v Indonésii pak více na své osobní životy, a to za doplnění o podnětné citáty a rady.

Abstract:

Social media has gradually become an indispensable tool for communication, sharing information and forming societal attitudes. For the Muslim communities across the world, this type of platforms also serves as a means of interaction for sharing religious values and mutual connections. In this thesis, I focused on this religious content in Malaysia and Indonesia. While using content analysis to examine Instagram feeds, as one of the most popular social media in those two countries, 7,568 post had been assessed within 20 selected Instagram profiles. And afterwards, the outcomes were compared in case of both countries. The results of this analysis show that a vast majority of posts had accounted for the category of educational content. Given posts were meant to educate the followers in terms of Islam as a religion. Most frequently, those posts were in the forms of videos from where the educational events had taken place. At the same time, photos served as invitations from the Islamic preachers to their seminars. Regarding the content differences, Malaysian preachers focused on the Quran and its interpretations. Indonesian preachers, by contrast, shared more from their lives, accompanied by inspirational quotes and advice.
