Calibration and field testing of passive samplers for monitoring personal care products in the aquatic environment

Abstract:

Předložená diplomová práce má za cíl shrnout současně používané techniky pasivního vzorkování povrchových a odpadních vod, a to zejména pro skupinu látek denní potřeby. Látky denní potřeby, jako UV filtry, stabilizátory, desinfekce, syntetické vonné látky nebo kofein, jsou kontinuálně přiváděny z domácností do kanalizace a skrze čističky odpadních vod, kvůli jejich nízké odstraňovací účinnosti pro tyto látky, do přírodních řečišť. V teoretické části bude uveden stručný úvod a popis environmentální problematiky látek denní potřeby a jejich zařazení mezi emergentní polutanty, jejich monitoring a legislativní rámec ochrany vod před znečištěním. Je zde popsáno i pasivní a aktivní vzorkování, výhody a nevýhody těchto vzorkovacích metod. V praktické části je pak popsána laboratorní kalibrace pasivních vzorkovačů na bázi extrakčních disků Speedisk, a dále pak jejich použití v terénním testování. V laboratorních podmínkách se stanovovaly provozní charakteristiky vzorkovačů pro sledované látky – vzorkovací rychlost a kapacita vzorkovače. Také byly porovnány dvě metody stanovení koncentrace látek ve vodě; aktivním odběrem, kdy byla voda přefiltrována přes čistý Speedisk přímo z nádrže a využila se technika SPE. Druhým přístupem bylo pasivní vzorkování, kdy se koncentrace látek ve vodě vypočítala z nashromážděných množství látek v různě exponovaných Speediscích v kalibrační nádrži. V terénu pak byly vzorkovače nasazeny na odtoku přečištěné odpadní vody z čistírny odpadních vod v Brně – Modřicích. Zde se stanovovala koncentrace zmíněných látek v přečištěné odpadní vodě, která je dále vypouštěna do řeky Svratky. Ke stanovení koncentrace látek ve vyčištěné odpadní vodě se využilo pasivního vzorkování. Terénní data byla vyhodnocena pomocí kalibračních parametrů z laboratorní studie a byla odhadnuta koncentrace ve vodě a emise sledovaných látek z čistírny ve vyčištěné odpadní vodě.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis aims to summarize currently used techniques of passive sampling in surface water and wastewater, especially for the group of personal care products. These compounds such as UV filters, stabilizers, disinfectants, fragrances or caffeine are continuously drained from households to the sewage system and through the wastewater treatment plants, due to imperfect removal efficiency for these substances, they enter natural waters. The theoretical part there gives a brief introduction of personal care products and related environmental issues, as well as their inclusion as emerging pollutants, their monitoring and legislative framework addressing protection of surface waters from chemical pollution. Further, principles of passive and active sampling are given, and advantages and disadvantages of the two sampling methods are compared. In the practical part, laboratory calibration of passive samplers based on Speedisk extraction discs, and then their use in field testing is described. Under laboratory conditions, the performance characteristics of samplers for given substances were determined – sampling rate and sampler capacity. Two methods of determining the concentration of target compounds in water were also compared; active sampling, where water was filtered through a clean Speedisk directly from the tank and SPE method was applied. The second approach was passive sampling where the aqueous concentration was calculated from the accumulated amounts of compounds in differently long exposed Speedisks in the calibration tank. In the field, samplers were deployed in the effluent of treated water from the wastewater treatment plant in Modřice. Here, the concentration of these compounds in effluent to the Svratka River was determined. Field data was evaluated by means of calibration parameters from the laboratory study and the concentrations in water and the emissions of monitored substances from the treatment plant in the treated wastewater were estimated.
