Where do Czech family businesses go for advice? An exploratory study from the view of owners

Abstract:

Ačkoliv rodinné firmy využívají poradce ve svém podnikání, oblast rad a poradenství rodinných firem je zatím relativně přehlížené téma ve výzkumu rodinných firem. Diplomová práce proto zkoumá oblast rad a poradenství u českých rodinných firem, a to z pohledu jejich vlastníků. Pomocí explorativní kolektivní případové studie práce zkoumá, jak vypadá proces hledání rady u šesti vlastníků českých rodinných firem a jak se vlastníci dívají na postavu poradce. Výsledky vytváří logický model pochopení daného fenoménu. Výsledkem práce je zjištění, že vlastníci rodinných firem se nejdříve obrací na rodinu zapojenou v podniku, následně na určité skupiny jedinců ve specifickém vztahu k vlastníkovi – firemní zdroje, peers a asociace. Teprve po vyčerpání možnosti rady z těchto zdrojů se obrací na externí formální poradce. Tato teze neplatí, pokud se rady týkají oblastí, ve kterých je třeba mít specifické vzdělání – jako poradenství daňové či právní.

Abstract:

Although family businesses use advisors for their enterprises, the field of advice and family business advisory is relatively overlooked topic in the family business research. Therefore, the thesis examines the field of advice and consulting of Czech family firms from the standpoint of six family firm owners. Using explorative multiple case study, the thesis examines what is the process of seeking an advice from the standpoint of the owner, as well as how the owners perceive attributes of an advisor. The author creates a conceptual framework of the advice-seeking process. The result of the thesis is a discovery that owners of family businesses first seek advice from the family members involved in business. Subsequently, they turn to the specific groups of individuals with a relationship to the owner – firm resources, peers and professionals’ networks. Only after exhausting these resources they seek external advisors. This principle is not holding if the advice is needed for which a specific education is necessary – such as tax or legal advice.
