Ancestor Worship in the Pre-Exilic Israel

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je načrtnout obraz kultu předků ve starém Izraeli a osvětlit jeho význam a funkci. Na základě biblických, archeologických a komparativních dat dospívá k závěru, že transakce mezi živými a mrtvými v předexilním Izraeli živým nejen pomáhala vyrovnat se s faktem smrtelnosti, pro živé byl jejich vztah se zemřelými rovněž zdrojem jejich identity. Specifickým rysem izraelského kultu předků (v porovnání s urbánními kulturami Mezopotámie a Ugaritu) bylo jeho spojení se zděděnou zemí. Země jako nejdůležitější zdroj obživy byla materiálním výrazem požehnání otců. Konec kultu předků lze vysvětlit jako výsledek centralizačního tlaku v souvislosti s Jóšijášovou reformou, jejímž cílem bylo eliminovat lokální kultická a mocenská centra. Důležitý faktor lze spatřovat rovněž ve změně vztahů mezi generacemi v důsledku sociálních otřesů a krize. Zároveň je možné, že eliminace kultu předků se týkala jen judských elit a že z žitého náboženství nikdy nevymizel.

Abstract:

The obective of this Master thesis is to draw a picture of an ancestors cult in ancient Israel and to explain its meaning and function. On the basis of biblical, archeological and comparative data it comes to the conclusion, that the transaction between the living and dead in pre-exilic Israel helped not only to face up the fact of inevitable death. For living the relationship with their ancestors was also a source of their identity. The specific feature of Israelite ancestors cult (compared with the urban cultures of Mesopotamia, Ugarit etc.) was the connection with inherited land. Land as the most important source of living was the material expression of the blessing of fathers. The end of an ancestors cult can be explained as a result of centralizing pressure related to the reform of Josijah, focused on elimination of local cultic centres and centres of power. Important circumstance can be seen also in the change of relationship between the generations as the consequence of social trauma and crisis. But it is also possible, that the elimination of the ancestors cult aplied only to the elites of Judah and that the ancestors cult in the people´s religion never disappeared.
