Influence of the Western concept of religion in the formation and development of Brahmo samaj

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá indickou reformní společností Bráhmosamádž od jejího vzniku do tzv. druhého rozkolu v roce 1878. Hlavní důraz je kladen na detailní rozbor myšlenek, které se týkají pojetí náboženství u jejích hlavních osobností, tedy Rámmohana Ráje, Debendranátha Thákura a Kešaba Čandry Séna. Tyto osobnosti měli přímý vliv na formování a směřování této společnosti. Cílem práce je ukázat, pomocí důkladné analýzy pramenných textů a následné komparace, na míru (ne)přijetí západních konceptů právě těmito osobnostmi. Jedná se o koncepty týkající se náboženství (Bůh, svatá písma atd.). Výsledkem analýzy bude prokázání skutečnosti, že ačkoliv byli vůdci Bráhmosamádže implicitně i explicitně ovlivněni křesťanským přístupem k náboženství, celá jimi diskutovaná problematika byla uchopena specifickým způsobem, který je charakteristický pro indické tradice. Ukazuje na názorovou deformaci křesťanské nauky tak, jak je pojímána na Západě. Z výzkumu je patrné, že uvedené osobnosti nepochopili základní dogmata a principy křesťanství, ale transformovali a uchopili je dle svého pojetí indických tradic. Z komplexního pohledu se potvrzuje hypotéza o rozdílném způsobu náboženského myšlení u západních a indických obyvatel.

Abstract:

This work deals with indian reform organisation called Brahmo Somaj from its rise till the socalled second major schism in year 1878. The main emphasis lies in detail analysis of ideas, which relates to the notion of religion in case of four main personalities, Rammohun Roy, Devendranath Tagore and Keshub Chandra Sen. These people had direct influence to formation and evolution of this society. The main aim of this work is to show (with help of profound analysis of prime sources and following comparison) our thesis. The thesis contains of premise of (not)acceptation of western concepts linked with religon. The analysis result is proving the fact, that althought were Brahmos implicitely or explicitely affected by christian notion of religion, discussed issues were taken up in very specific mode. This mode shows deformation of Christian doctrine in sense common in the West. From this research is evident that Brahmos didn´t understand basic doctrines and principles of Christianity, but transformed them and understand them according their notion and understanding of indian traditions. From the general point of view will be verified hypothesis about different way of thinking in case of western and indian nations.
