Education in Great Britain: Historical Development, Reforms and Their Impact on the System’s Performance

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je na základě historického vývoje a analýzi nobodobých reformem přiblížit strukturu britského vzdělávacího systému, který je tvořen dvěmi na sobě nezávislými větvemi; státními školami a soukromým sektorem. První část popisuje vzdělávací systém jako celek a specifika jednotlivých škol dle provozovalelů, učební osnovy a testovací mechanismy. Druhá část popisuje historický přehled vývoje školství od středověku až do současnosti s důrazem na reformy, které se uskutečnily zejména na konci 20 století pod vedením konzervativní strany v letech 1979 – 1997 a labouristické strany po vítězství ve volbách v roce 1997. Třetí část a závěrečná část práce analyzuje tyto reformy a jejich dopad na zkvalitnění výuky a rozšíření přístupu ke vzdělání. Podkapitoly této části věnovány detailní analýze těchto témat, podpořené citacemi z primárních a sekundárních zdrojů.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to analyse the British Education, which consists of two main strands; state schools and private sector which developed historically independently from each other. The objective of the first part is to introduce the structure of the British education system, the role of examination, funding mechanism, the National curriculum and the options for vocational and higher education in Great Britain.The second part describes the historical development from the medieval period until now with a focus on reforms under the Conservative and Labour governments in the last decades of the 20th century. The final part of the thesis analyses the impact on those reforms in termsof improving standards and widening access to education as these areas were identified as pressing by both governments.The subchapters are devoted to the detailed analysis of these themes, supported with citations of primary and secondary sources.
