Birth rate and fertility in European countries

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je srovnat vývoj plodnosti a porodnosti v evropských zemích od roku 1960. Jedná se o ukazatele, které jsou ovlivňovány nesčetným množstvím vnějších vlivů. Mezi ty hlavní patří politická agenda vlády, ekonomická situace země, společenské a kulturní trendy či vliv náboženství. V současnosti mají na plodnost čím dál tím větší vliv také imigranti, kteří v hojném počtu proudí do zemí Evropy a zakládají zde rodiny. Po identifikaci regionů, ve kterých se plodnost a porodnost vyvíjela podobně s přihlédnutím na jejich geografické umístění, lze Evropu rozdělit na několik oblastí, ve kterých lze s přijatelnou variabilitou vypočíst průměrnou úhrnnou plodnost. Tato průměrná hodnota byla spočtena jako součet specifických plodností vypočtených jako podíl živě narozených a počtu žen v jednotlivých věkových skupinách v dané územní oblasti. Práce s těmito hodnotami pro jednotlivé oblasti, namísto porovnání vývoje ve všech zemích zvlášť, umožňuje mnohem přehlednější srovnání tohoto ukazatele v celoevropském měřítku. Tato práce se věnuje také historickému vývoji plodnosti a porodnosti v jednotlivých zemích a oblastech Evropy, jemuž dominují dvě fáze demografického přechodu. Jedná se o fenomén, kdy postupně došlo jak k poklesu úmrtnosti především díky pokroku v medicíně, tak k následnému poklesu plodnosti pod hranici prosté reprodukce. Dále je věnována pozornost propopulační politice jednotlivých zemí a schopnostem vlády plodnost ovlivňovat. Mezi další analyzované ukazatele se řadí vztah plodnosti a manželství, pořadí narozených, měsíc narození, vzděláni matek a jejich průměrný věk. Krátce se práce věnuje také používaným metodám antikoncepce a četnosti potratů. V poslední kapitole jsou uvedeny také tři populační projekce - pro země Evropské unie, pro Českou republiku a nakonec celosvětová.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to compare the development of fertility and birth rates in European countries throughout the last fifty years since 1960. These two indicators are influenced by numerous factors. The major ones include government agenda, economic situation of a particular country, social and cultural trends and the influence of religion. Currently, there is a growing impact of immigration on fertility. A lot of immigrants coming to Europe start a family there and help raise the low fertility level. After taking into account geographical differences as well as differentials in fertility and birth rates, it is possible to divide Europe into several areas in which an average total fertility rate with an acceptable variability can be computed. This rate is calculated as the sum of specific fertility rates that represent the division of children born alive and the number of women in each age group in specific area. Working with these average total fertility rates for the areas instead of comparing the development in each country separately allows for a much clearer comparison at the European level. This thesis also provides a historical development of fertility and birth rates in individual countries as well as in European regions; this development is linked by two stages of demographical transition. It is a phenomenon combining the decline in mortality primarily thanks to the progress in medicine and the decline in fertility below the replacement level. A lot of attention is also paid to pro-natality politics and to the ability of the government to influence fertility. Other analyzed indicators are: relation between fertility and marriage, birth order, month of birth, the highest education achieved by mothers and their average age. Finally, this work deals with the common methods of contraception as well as the number of abortions. The last chapter describes three population projections - the first for EU members, then for the Czech Republic and the last for the whole world.
