Differences in the nutrition of the Black rhinoceros Diceros bicornis and the Southern white rhinoceros Ceratotherium simum in the Dvůr Králové nad Labem ZOO during their year-round feeding activity

Abstract:

V roce 2011 byla zásadním způsobem přehodnocena taxonomie nosorožců nejen na poddruhové, ale také na úrovni druhové. U nosorožce dvourohého Diceros bicornis proběhly změny v počtu poddruhů, avšak nosorožec tuponosý Ceratotherium simum byl nově povýšen na samostatný druh s novým taxonomickým pojmenováním, a byl tak oddělen od nosorožce severního Ceratotherium cotoni. Oba druhy nosorožců, sledovaných v této práci, se řadí mezi typické africké lichokopytníky, liší se však typem obývaných stanovišť, jejichž flora je velmi rozdílná. Tyto odlišnosti se v důsledku zásadním způsobem podílejí na zcela rozdílném složení jejich přirozené potravy a z toho vyplývající odlišné fyziologii, morfologii a jiném metabolismu. Hlavní potravou nosorožce tuponosého jsou ve volné přírodě především různé druhy travin, které spásá ze země, proto je charakterizován jako tzv. „spásač“ a potravní spektrum je omezené na několik druhů rostlin. Naopak nosorožec dvourohý má potravní spektrum v přírodě velmi široké a je řazen mezi tzv. „okusovače“. Tyto specifikace v potravním chování také zásadním způsobem limitují způsob celosvětového chovu obou druhů v lidské péči a výrazně tak ovlivňují složení předkládané krmné dávky v celosvětových chovech. Zásadní rozdíly v potravě obou sledovaných druhů nosorožců byly dány dlouhým evolučním vývojem, kdy se nosorožci museli postupně přizpůsobovat životu ve zcela odlišných biotopech, které nabízely jiné životní podmínky a jiné potravní zdroje. Těmto odlišnostem se postupně přizpůsobila jejich fyziologie, morfologie i anatomie. To vše se potom promítlo také ve zcela jiném potravním chování. Nosorožci jsou býložravci, kteří přeměňují potravu na energii prostřednictvím mikrobiální fermentace v zadním trávicím ústrojí, avšak oba sledované druhy se liší ve své specializaci na skupiny rostlin. Nosorožec tuponosý konzumuje listy a stonky trav/monokotyledonů, zatímco nosorožec dvourohý se pase na keřích, a konzumuje stromy, keře, byliny, rostliny – hlavně dvouděložné rostliny Nosorožec dvourohý žije v různorodém habitu Afriky – od pouště Namib až po horské pralesy Keni. Převážně jej lze nalézt na zalesněných loukách, v akátové savaně, v lesních stepích a v křovinatých a listnatých lesích a také v blízkosti vody. Přirozené prostředí nosorožce tuponosého je charakterizováno otevřenými travnatými stepmi a křovinatými savanami, odkud musí mít stálý přístup k vodním zdrojům, protože takové prostředí mu poskytuje vhodné podmínky pro pastvu a pohyb. Nosorožec dvourohý je charakterizován jako adaptabilní býložravec, který reaguje na dostupnost rostlin v prostředí, pastevní tlak a přírodní události, jako jsou požáry. Jeho potravní preference jsou ovlivněny nejen prostředím, ale i typem půdy, přičemž v oblastech s písčitou půdou preferuje krátké druhy trávy. Mezi důležité zdroje potravy nosorožce dvourohého patří ve volné přírodě vybrané rody akácií, uzlence, krotonů a bobovitých rostlin, mandlovníků a blahokamýku. Druh je známý tím, že se dokáže živit i rostlinami, které jsou pro jiné býložravce toxické – v období sucha může konzumovat stonky sukulentů, pryšců či durmanů. Jeho přirozená potrava je tedy velmi pestrá. Zvířata se cíleně vyhýbají rostlinám obsahujícím silné obranné těkavé chemické sloučeniny, jako jsou fenoly a alkaloidy, avšak četnost vyhledávání potravy z keřů může být ovlivněna dostupností. Nosorožec tuponosý má ve volné přírodě na rozdíl od nosorožce dvourohého přirozenou potravu mnohem chudší. Oblíbenými jsou plazivé trávy, proso nebo vyšší listnaté lipnico

vité traviny či traviny rostoucí ve stínu stromů. Obecně se dá říct, že nosorožce tuponosého evoluce nasměrovala k velmi malým potravním nárokům, a proto je nutné v chovech tuto vlastnost striktně akceptovat. Cílem diplomové práce bylo porovnat krmné dávky nosorožců dvourohých a nosorožců tuponosých chovaných v Zoologické zahradě Dvůr Králové nad Labem a sledovat změny individuálních krmných dávek také v rámci každého druhu během čtyř sezónních období v průběhu roku 2023. V daném období byly pravidelně sledovány krmné dávky 13 jedinců nosorožce dvourohého (včetně 3 mláďat) a 6 nosorožců tuponosých. Z výpočtů i naměřených dat jasně vyplývají zřetelné rozdíly v krmné dávce obou druhů. Výsledky potvrdily rozdílnost v krmné dávce v průběhu roku a hlavně její proměnlivost mezi ročními obdobími, kromě méně výrazného rozdílu mezi podzimem a zimou. Rozdíly v krmné dávce mezi druhy byly výrazné již z grafů a statistické porovnání také jednoznačně jasný rozdíl potvrdilo. Jak vyplývá z podrobných grafů u nosorožce dvourohého lze pozorovat v letním období větší variabilitu druhů zeleniny. V krmné dávce se vyskytují sezónní druhy zeleniny (např. cukety, okurky, saláty apod.). V zimním období je množství druhů zeleniny nižší, a denní příděl zeleniny je tvořen především mrkví, řepou a topinambury. U nosorožce tuponosého je v letním období zelenina zcela vynechána, a v zimním období je zařazena jen v malém množství. Nosorožec tuponosý je krmen hlavně lučním senem a čerstvě sečenou trávou, případně mírným přídavkem vojtěšky. Ovoce, zelenina a obilné produkty se podávají v malém množství. Oba druhy mají stálý přístup k senu a vodě, od solných lizů se odstoupilo a sůl je přidávána individuálně přímo do krmné dávky. Objemové krmivo je oběma druhům přístupné ad libitum. Zelenina a jádro se u nosorožců tuponosých krmí většinou najednou jednou denně. V případě, že nosorožci chodí do výběhu dvakrát denně, dostávají při prvním návratu do vnitřní ubikace jadrné krmivo, a při druhém návratu dostanou zeleninu. Krmení nosorožců dvourohých probíhá minimálně dvakrát denně, kvůli jejich relativně rychlému trávení. Nosorožci dvourozí mají v letním období dostatek olistěného okusu, v zimním období se jeho nedostatek kompenzuje tzv. listáží, která se však zkrmuje jen v malém množství společně s neolistěným okusem. V letním i v zimním režimu je do objemné části krmné dávky nosorožcům dvourohým zařazeno vojtěškové seno. V letním období je navíc přikrmována čerstvá vojtěška, která se jeví jako optimální volba krmiva z hlediska opotřebení zubů a trávení a je v dietě nosorožců hlavním zdrojem železa. Provedené statistické výpočty pro porovnání krmných dávek a potvrzení či vyvrácení hypotéz zjistily výsledky, které naznačují, že potřeby krmiva se u obou druhů nosorožců skutečně lišily v závislosti na sezóně – konkrétně byly významné rozdíly mezi všemi kombinacemi ročních období s výjimkou kombinace zima/podzim, kde rozdíly v krmné dávce nebyly statisticky významné. Statisticky významné rozdíly mezi jarními, letními a podzimními obdobími u nosorožců dvourohých i u nosorožců tuponosých oproti ostatním kombinacím ukázaly na sezónní variace ve stravovacích potřebách, zatímco podobnost mezi podzimem a zimou naznačily potřebu krmiva stabilnější. V práci byla také sledována výživa 3 mláďat nosorožce dvourohého, z nichž 2 se narodila v průběhu sběru dat. Z výsledků mapování jadrné části a doplňků v krmné dávce je patrné postupné navyšování krmné dávky v souladu s tím, jak mláďata dorůstala a omezovala mléčnou výživu. Matkám se před odstavem mláděte přestává podávat laktační čaj, aby se laktace mohla co nejpřirozeněji utlumit. Tato situace je nyní aktuální právě před plánovaným odstavem mladého samečka Kyjeva, který se narodil krátce před zahájením sledování. Odstav mláďat je individuální, většinou probíhá kolem druhého roku jejich života. Výživa mláďat startovala na mlezivu a mateřském mléce. Zpočátku byla mláďata vyživována pouze mateřským mlékem od své matky, později se však začala zajímat o krmnou dávku svých matek a zhruba v půl roce jim začala být podávána vlastní krmná dávka. Samozřejmě byly navyšovány také dávky pro všechny tři matky. Obě mláďata – Mihindi i Magashi – začínali přijímat části krmné dávky od svých matek zhruba kolem prvního měsíce věku, zájem o matčinu krmnou dávku však projevovali již o něco dříve. Zoologická zahrada ve Dvoře Králové nad Labem patří mezi nejúspěšnější chovatele nosorožců na světě, narodilo se zde již padesát mláďat. Chov nosorožců je velmi náročný, stejně tak jako jejich výživa. Snahou této práce bylo přehledným způsobem zpracovat problematiku krmení nosorožců v lidské péči, což může pomoci dalším chovatelům lépe uchopit chov těchto ušlechtilých zvířat. Výsledky této práce zároveň poslouží jako zpětná vazba pro využití v praxi v ZOO Dvůr Králové nad Labem a může být odrazovým můstkem pro další výzkumné práce.

Abstract:

In 2011, the taxonomy of rhinoceros was fundamentally re-evaluated not only at the subspecies level, but also at the species level. The black rhinoceros Diceros bicornis underwent changes in the number of subspecies, but the southern white rhinoceros Ceratotherium simum was newly elevated as a separate species with a new taxonomic name that separated it from the northern white rhinoceros. Both species of rhinoceroses observed in this work belong to typical African ungulates, but they differ from each other in the type of inhabited habitats, the flora of which is very different. As a result, these differences contribute in a fundamental way to the completely different composition of their natural food and the resulting different physiology, morphology and different metabolism. The main food of the southern white rhinoceros in the wild is mainly various types of grass that it grazes from the ground, therefore it is characterized as a so-called "grazer" and its food spectrum is limited to a few types of plants. On the contrary, the black rhinoceros has a very wide food spectrum in nature and is classified among the so-called "browser". These specifications in feeding behavior also fundamentally limit the method of worldwide breeding of both species in human care and thus significantly influence the composition of the presented feed ration in worldwide farms. The fundamental differences in the food of the two monitored species of rhinoceros were due to a long evolutionary development, when the rhinoceros had to gradually adapt to life in completely different biotopes, which offered different living conditions and other food sources. Their physiology, morphology and anatomy gradually adapted to these differences. All this was then also reflected in a completely different eating behavior and a different metabolism. Rhinoceroses are herbivores that convert food into energy through microbial fermentation in the hindgut, but the two species studied differ in their specialization on plant groups. The southern white rhinoceros consumes leaves and stems of grasses/monocotyledons, while the black rhinoceros grazes on shrubs and consumes trees, shrubs, herbs, plants – mainly dicots The black rhinoceros lives in the diverse habitat of Africa – from the Namib desert to the mountain forests of Kenya. It can mostly be found in wooded meadows, in acacia savannah, in forest steppes and in scrub and deciduous forests and near water. The natural environment of the southern white rhinoceros is characterized by open grassy steppes and scrubby savannahs, from which it must have access to water sources, as such environments provide suitable conditions for grazing and locomotion. The black rhinoceros is characterized as an adaptable herbivore that responds to plant availability in the environment, grazing pressure and natural events such as fires. Its food preferences are influenced not only by the environment, but also by the type of soil, with a preference for short types of grass in areas with sandy soil. Among the important sources of food for the black rhinoceros are selected genera of acacias, knotweed, crotons and leguminous plants in the wild, almond trees and calendula. The species is known for being able to feed on plants that are toxic to other herbivores – in the dry season it can consume the stems of succulents, sedums or dahlias. Its natural food is therefore very varied. Animals purposefully avoid plants containing potent defensive volatile chemical compounds such as phenols and alkaloids, but the frequency of foraging from shrubs may be influenced by availability. Unlike the black rhinoceros, the southern white rhinoceros feeds on only a few types of grass in the wild, and its natural diet is much poorer. os has led to very small food requirements, and therefore it is necessary to strictly accept this characteristic in breeding. The aim of the thesis was to compare the feed rations of black rhinos and southern white rhinos kept in the Dvur Králové nad Labem Zoo and to monitor changes in individual feed rations also within each species during four seasonal periods during 2023. During the given period, the feed rations of 13 individuals were regularly monitored two-horned rhino (including 3 cubs) and 6 southern rhinos. The calculations and measured data clearly show clear differences in the feed ration of both species. The results confirmed the variation in feed ration throughout the year and its variability between seasons, except for a less significant difference between autumn and winter. The differences in feed ration between the species were already evident from the graphs, the statistical comparison also clearly confirmed the clear difference. As can be seen from the detailed graphs for the black rhinoceros, greater variability of vegetable types can be observed in the summer. The ration includes seasonal vegetables (e.g. zucchini, cucumbers, salads, etc.). In winter, the amount of vegetables is lower, and the daily vegetable ration consists mainly of carrots, beets and Jerusalem artichokes. In the case of the southern white rhinoceros, vegetables are completely omitted in the summer, and only a small amount is included in the winter. The southern white rhinoceros is fed mainly on meadow senem and freshly cut grass, possibly with a slight addition of alfalfa. Fruits, vegetables and grain products are served in small quantities. All species have constant access to hay and water, salt licks have been abandoned and salt is added individually directly to the ration. Bulk feed is available to the rhinos ad libitum. Vegetables and kernels are usually fed together once a day for southern white rhinos. If the rhinos go to the enclosure twice a day, they receive solid food on the first return to the indoor enclosure, and vegetables on the second return. Black rhinos are fed at least twice a day, due to their relatively fast digestion. Black rhinoceroses have plenty of leafy taste in summer, in winter its lack is compensated by the so-called foliage, which, however, is fed in small quantities together with non-leafy taste. Alfalfa hay is included in the bulk of the feed ration for black rhinoceroses in both summer and winter regimes. In summer, fresh alfalfa is additionally fed, which appears to be the optimal choice of feed in terms of tooth wear and digestion and is the main source of iron in the rhinoceros' diet. Statistical calculations performed to compare feed rations and confirm or disprove the hypotheses found results indicating that the feed requirements of both rhino species did indeed differ depending on the season – specifically, there were significant differences between all combinations of seasons except for the winter/autumn combination where differences in feed ration were not statistically significant. Statistically significant differences between the spring, summer and autumn periods in both the black rhinoceros and the southern white rhinoceros compared to the other combinations indicated seasonal variations in dietary requirements, while the similarity between autumn and winter indicated a more stable feed requirement in these periods. The work also monitored the nutrition of 3 young black rhinoceroses, 2 of which were born during data collection. From the results of the mapping of the core part and supplements in the feed ration, it is evident that the feed ration was gradually increased in accordance with how the chicks grew up and limited milk nutrition. Mothers stop giving lactation tea before the baby is weaned, so that lactation can be suppressed as naturally as possible. This situation is now relevant just before the planned weaning of the young male Kyjev. The weaning of cubs is individual, it usually takes place around the second year of the cub's life. The young's nutrition started with mother's milk. At first, the cubs were fed only with their mother's breast milk, but later they became interested in their mothers' rations and at about half a year they were given their own rations. Of course, the benefits for all three mothers were also increasing. Both Mihindi and Magashi cubs started to receive parts of their mother's ration around the first month of age, but they showed interest in their mother's ration a little earlier. The zoo in Dvůr Králové nad Labem is one of the most successful rhino breeders in the world, fifty cubs have already been born here. Breeding rhinos is very demanding, as is their nutrition. The aim of this work was to process the problem of feeding rhinoceroses in human care in a clear way, which can help other breeders to better grasp the breeding of these noble animals. The results of this work will also serve as feedback for use in practice at the Dvur Králové nad Labem Zoo and can be a springboard for further research work.
