Total ozone and UV radiation variability in relation to atmospheric circulation over the Arctic

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce bylo hodnocení časoprostorové variability stratosférického ozonu a ultrafialového (UV) slunečního záření v Arktidě a na vybraných evropských stanicích ve vztahu k stratosférické cirkulaci. Stratosférická cirkulace byla hodnocena na základě reanalyzovaných dat teploty vzduchu, geopotenciální výšky, potenciální vorticity a zonální rychlosti větru v hladině 50 hPa. Pro potřeby hodnocení celkového ozonu a slunečního UV záření bylo také využito dostupných družicových a pozemních měření. Data byla analyzována pomocí základních statistických metod, prostorových korelací a analýzy hlavních komponent. Výsledky práce potvrdily, že v případě existence silného polárního víru dochází nad Arktidou k tvorbě ozonové anomálie, která zejména v polárních oblastech způsobuje pokles celkového ozonu a nárůst slunečního UV záření. K největšímu ztenčení arktické ozonové vrstvy došlo v březnu 2020, a to až o 40–50 % v porovnání s rokem 2019. V letech se slabým polárním vírem nevzniká ozonová anomálie a pokles celkového ozonu na vybraných stanicích souvisí zejména s meridionální advekcí na ozon chudšího vzduchu z nižších zeměpisných šířek.

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis was to evaluate the spatiotemporal variability of stratospheric ozone and ultraviolet (UV) solar radiation in the Arctic and at selected European stations in relation to the stratospheric circulation. The stratospheric circulation was evaluated based on reanalyzed data of air temperature, geopotential height, potential vorticity, and zonal wind speed at the 50 hPa level. Available satellite and ground measurements were used to evaluate total ozone content and solar UV radiation. Data were analyzed using basic statistical methods, spatial correlations, and principal component analysis. The results confirmed that in the case of the existence of a strong polar vortex, an ozone depletion occurs over the Arctic, which causes a decrease in total ozone content and an increase in solar UV radiation, especially in this region. The most significant reduction of the Arctic ozone layer occurred in March 2020, reaching up to 40-50% compared to 2019. In years with a weak polar vortex, there is no formation of the ozone depletion, and the decrease in total ozone content at selected stations is mainly related to meridional advection of poorer air on ozone from lower latitudes.
