Assessment of Norway spruce vitality in the middle and upper parts of the Czech Republic using habitual tree diagnostics and annual ring analysis

Abstract:

Vitalita stromů je jedním z důležitých ukazatelů stavu lesa (INNES, 1993). Protože vitalitu nelze měřit přímo, mohou k jejímu popisu sloužit pouze vhodně stanovené indikátory (GEHRIG, 2004). Aby byly naplněny cíle této práce, bylo zvoleno podrobné terénní hodnocení korun jedinců smrku ztepilého (Picea abies (L.) Karst.), tzv. habituální diagnostika stromů (dle CUDLÍN A KOL., 2001) a dendrochronologická analýza. Celkem bylo v průběhu let 2005 až 2015 hodnoceno 2 342 jedinců smrku ztepilého. Výsledky práce shrnují získaná terénní data dle jednotlivých pozorovaných popisných veličin hodnocení korun, dále obrazově uvádí výsledky dendrochronologické analýzy. Tato data jsou dále podrobena statistické analýze přijmutí či vyvrácení vyřčených hypotéz, včetně konfrontace habituální diagnostiky s aritmetickými průměry detrendovaných šířek letokruhů. Výsledky ukázaly, že lepší zdravotní stav měly smrky na edafických kategoriích ovlivněných vodou, mimo jižní expozice a také ve vyšších nadmořských výškách. Nicméně poslední roky ukazují, že pěstování smrku mimo jeho ekologické optimum již nebude možné, a je proto nutné hledat nová východiska z aktuálně probíhající bezprecedentní kalamity smrkových monokultur (HLÁSNÝ A KOL., 2021a), která byla pravděpodobně iniciována predispozičním působením opakovaného a dlouhodobého sucha posledních let (BÜNTGEN A KOL., 2021).

Abstract:

Tree vitality is one of the important indicators of forest condition (INNES, 1993). Because vitality cannot be measured directly, only appropriately defined indicators can be used to describe it (GEHRIG, 2004). In order to meet the objectives of this work, a detailed field evaluation of crowns of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.), called habitual tree diagnostics (based on CUDLÍN ET AL., 2001), and dendrochronological analysis were chosen. A total of 2 342 individuals of Norway spruce were evaluated during the years 2005 to 2015. The results of the work summarize the obtained field data according to the individual observed descriptive quantities of the evaluation of crowns, and also present the results of dendrochronological analysis. These data are further subjected to a statistical analysis of the acceptance or refutation of the stated hypotheses, including the confrontation of habitual diagnostics with the arithmetic averages of detrended widths of annual rings. The results showed that spruces had better vitality in water-affected locations, outside the southern exposure, and also at higher altitudes. However, recent years show that growing spruce outside its ecological optimum will no longer be possible and it is therefore necessary to look for new ways out of the current unprecedented calamity of spruce monocultures (HLÁSNÝ ET AL., 2021a), which was probably initiated by the predisposing effects of repeated and prolonged drought years (BÜNTGEN ET AL., 2021).
