Automating configuration of computers in NLP laboratory

Abstract:

Správa konfigurace (configuration management) hraje klíčovou roli při správě výpočetní infrastruktury. V laboratoři Centra zpracování přirozeného jazyka (NLP) Fakulty informatiky je deset serverů a dvacet pracovních stanic spravováno pomocí nástroje pro správu konfigurace (configuration management tool) Synctool. Tato práce zkoumá hypotetický proces přechodu z nástroje Synctool na nástroj pro správu konfigurace Cdist. Teoretická část začíná úvodem do správy konfigurace, probírá příslušné pojmy a poskytuje stručný popis tří nástrojů pro správu konfigurace. Dále práce zkoumá výpočetní strukturu laboratoře NLP, její konfiguraci v systému Synctool a poskytuje náhled do postupů správy konfigurace používaných v reálných scénářích. Následně je popsána konfigurace těchto počítačů v systému Cdist, která představuje praktickou část této práce. Na srovnání systémů Synctool a Cdist je ukázáno, že Cdist nabízí větší flexibilitu při správě komplexních konfigurací a umožňuje detailnější kontrolu nad systémem. Nakonec jsou popsány problémy, které se vyskytly při tvorbě konfigurace v systému Cdist a jsou zdůrazněny skutečné problémy, které je třeba při používání nástroje Cdist zohlednit. V celé práci je kladen důraz na praktické implementační strategie, analýzu reálných příkladů a poznatky získané z hypotetického přechodu na systém Cdist.

Abstract:

Configuration management plays a crucial role in managing computational infrastructure. At the laboratory of the Natural Language Processing Centre (NLP), Faculty of Informatics, approximately ten servers and twenty workstations are managed using the Synctool configuration management tool. This thesis explores a hypothetical transition process from Synctool to the Cdist configuration management tool. The theoretical part begins with an introduction to configuration management, discussing relevant concepts and providing a brief description of three configuration management tools. Furthermore, the thesis investigates the structure of the NLP laboratory’s computing environment, its configuration in the Synctool system, and offers insights into the configuration management practices employed in real-world scenarios. Subsequently, the configuration of these computers in the Cdist system, created as the practical part of this thesis, is described. A comparison of Synctool and Cdist systems illustrates how Cdist offers greater flexibility in managing complex configurations, allowing for more granular control over the system. Finally, the challenges encountered during the transition of the configuration to Cdist are described, highlighting real issues that must be considered when using Cdist. Throughout the thesis, emphasis is placed on practical implementation strategies, analysis of real-world examples, and lessons learned from the hypothetical transition to Cdist.
