The attitude of helping professionals to positive behavioural changes of clients with metamphetamine addiction in therapeutic communities

Abstract:

The focus of this thesis lies in analysing the approach of helping professionals to positive changes in behaviour of clients with methamphetamine addiction who are treated in a therapeutic community. The theoretical part of the thesis defines the general and basic terms of the thesis, such as the change of behaviour, attitude, methamphetamine addiction, and therapeutic community. I have chosen the qualitative approach for my research and have exploited the technique of semi-structured interviews. The interpretative part of the thesis answers the main research question: What is the attitude of helping professionals to positive behavioural changes of clients with methamphetamine addiction in therapeutic communities? My research has shown that the helping professionals with long-term experience in the field shift their attitudes towards the change in clients and they become less emotionally accessible for clients over time. The recommendations for further practice and other research propositions are stated in the concluding part of the thesis.

Abstract:

Práca sa zaoberá postojom pomáhajúcich pracovníkov k pozitívnej zmene chovania u klientov so závislosťou na pervitíne liečiacich sa v terapeutickej komunite. V teoretickej časti práce som definovala základné pojmy práce, akými sú zmena chovania, postoj, závislosť na pervitíne a terapeutická komunita. Zvolila som pre svoj výskum kvalitatívny prístup a využila som techniku pološtrukturovaných rozhovorov. V interpretačnej časti odpovedám na hlavnú výskumnú otázku: Aký postoj ku pozitívnej zmene chovania zaujímajú pomáhajúci pracovníci pri práci s ľuďmi so závislosťou na pervitíne v terapeutických komunitách? Výskumom som zistila, že pomáhajúcim pracovníkom s dlhšou praxou sa postoj voči zmene klienta mení a stávajú sa pre klientov menej emočne dostupnými. Doporučenie pre prax a návrhy na ďalšie výskumy som uviedla v závere práce.
