Shingon and Tendai, the concordance or difference?

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se věnuje tématu japonských ezoterických škol Šingon a Tendai. Mým cílem je pomocí porovnání historických aspektů a prvků buddhistické nauky dokázat, že obě školy a přístupy jejich zakladatelů se podobají ve větší míře, než oba mistři přiznávají. Celá práce se orientuje na dobu životů Kúkaie a Saičóa, zakladatelů těchto škol, a tezí, na kterých svou osobitou nauku stavěli. Kategorie, které sleduji, se týkají nejprve historických fakt Kúkaie a Saičóa, obsahující stručný nástin jejich životů a předpokládané propojenosti mezi nimi. Nezbytnou součástí historické sekce je kapitola zabývaající se cestou do Číny prezentovanou ve dvou variantách, pro Kúkaie a Saičóa, po nichž následuje popis jejich přijetí po návratu do Japonska. V druhé části textu se zaměřuji na věroučné aspekty, které Šingon a Tendai prostupují. Zde vystupují do popředí čtyři hlavní kategorie, které považuji pro obě školy za klíčové a to rozdíl jejich nově nastolené nauky od učení původního, pramenná literatura, pojetí buddhy a možnost osvícení v tomto těle.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis is dedicated to the Japanese esoteric sects Shingon and Tendai. By a comparison of the historical aspects and elements of the buddhistic teaching I aspire to prove that both sects and the approaches of their founders are much more akin than both masters acknowledge. Whole the thesis is orientated on the life period of Kukai and Saicho, the founders of these sects, and the premises they have been their idiosyncratic teachings building upon. The categories I follow apply first on the historical facts of Kukai and Saicho and contain a brief outline of their life and supposed congruence between them. A crucial part of the historical section is the chapter dealing with their separate journeys to China, for Kukai and Saicho respectively, which follows a description of their reception after returning to Japan. In the second part of the text I aim on what both Shingon and Tendai concentrate in their teachings. Here come up the four principal categories that I regard essential for both sects: the difference of a new thought receding from their former teaching, the bibliography, the concept of buddha and the possibility of enlightment in this very body.
