Original versus Fanfiction: The Literary Universe of Harry Potter in the Perspective of Stylometry

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá porovnáním vybraných fanfikcí s knihami, ze kterých tematicky vychází, v našem případě tedy se sérií Harryho Pottera (HP). Nejprve představíme originální dílo a vymezíme základní podmínky k tomu, abychom texty mohli považovat za fanfikce, a následně ve stručnosti přiblížíme jejich historii. Pro účely práce bylo zvoleno šest amatérských, na internetu zveřejněných fanfikcí odkazujících na svět Harryho Pottera. V metodologické části se budeme věnovat procesu této selekce, úpravám korpusu a softwarům, které jsme pro sběr a analýzu dat využili. Dále přiblížíme využívané stylometrické indikátory a metody, konkrétně aktivitu (Q), průměrnou délku tokenu (ATL), slovní bohatství (MATTR), vzdálenost sloves (VD) a analýzu nejfrekventovanějších slov (MFW), na jejichž základě budou v praktické části veškeré texty analyzovány a interpretovány. Cílem práce je přispět ke snahám zmapovat zatím neprobádaný fenomén českých fanfikcí pomocí replikovatelných a intersubjektivních metod, které nabízí kvantitativní lingvistika.

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis deals with the comparison of selected fanfictions with the text on which they are based, in our case with the Harry Potter series. Firstly, we will introduce the original books themselves and the basic conditions to consider a text a fanfiction, and then we will briefly outline their history. For the sake of the thesis, six amateur fanfictions published on the internet and referring to the world of Harry Potter were chosen. In the methodology section of the thesis, we will discuss the corpus selection, editing process of the corpus as well as the software we used for data collection and analysis. We will furthermore provide a description of the used stylometric indicators and methods, namely activity (Q), average token length (ATL), vocabulary richness (MATTR), verb distance (VD), and the most frequent words analysis (MFW). On the basis of these methods, all texts will be analysed and interpreted in the practical section. The purpose of the thesis is to contribute to the efforts to map the so far unexplored phenomenon of the Czech fanfictions by means of replicable and intersubjective methods that are offered by quantitative linguistics.
