The Names for Porridge and Bread in Slavonic Languages. A Historical and Comparative Study

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá vznikem a pojmenováním kaše a chleba. Při analýze těchto slov se postupuje od samotného vzniku pojmenování, hledá se indoevropský kořen a podoba slova v ostatních slovanských jazycích. Jádro práce spočívá v porovnání podoby výrazů kaše a chleba v češtině a ve slovanských jazycích, všímá si rovněž nářečních podob v současné češtině. Zaznamenává, jak tyto termíny pronikly do lidových přísloví, pořekadel, přirovnání nebo pranostik. Zachycuje i přenesené významy, které názvy kaše a chleba mohou získat při výskytu v názvech rostlin nebo věcí, v příjmeních, toponymech či hydronymech. Aby tyto poznatky byly začleněny do patřičného rámce, je tato práce doplněna o část zabývající se dějinami přípravy kaše a chleba.

Abstract:

The Bachelor’s thesis deals with the origins of names for porridge and bread. The analysis of these words starts with the formation of the naming and continues with the search for Indo-European roots of the expressions and their forms in other Slavonic languages. The central point of the thesis consists in a comparison of various forms of expressions for “porridge” and “bread” in Czech and other Slavonic languages, including vernacular forms in present Czech. The thesis describes the way these terms entered folk sayings, proverbs, comparisons or weather lore. It also includes transferred meanings which the terms for “porridge” and “bread” may acquire in the names of plants or objects, in surnames, toponyms and hydronyms. In order to incorporate these observations into a proper frame, the thesis includes a section dealing with the history of porridge and bread making.
