Transhumanism: An extension of individual autonomy, or a threat to an egalitarian society?

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá sporem transhumanistů s kritickým názorem Jürgena Habermase, který se týká hypotetického zlepšování pomocí zásahů do lidského genomu – obzvláště s ohledem k diskutabilnímu právu rodičů utvářet genom svých potomků. První část práce představuje transhumanistické myšlení, které se do velké míry zakládá na individualismu a vyzdvihování osobních svobod. Druhá část práce vysvětluje Habermasovu kritiku biotechnologií z hlediska nežádoucích společenských dopadů prostřednictvím interpretace jeho stěžejních argumentů. Třetí část představuje hodnocení sporu skrze systematicky vyloženou argumentaci obou názorových stran. V poslední části je formulováno kontextové zhodnocení soudobé společnosti, na níž lze nahlížet prostřednictvím názorové nesmiřitelnosti předložených konfliktních stran.

Abstract:

This thesis is based on the dispute of transhumanists with the critical opinion of Jürgen Habermas, which concerns a hypothetical improvement by means of interventions in a human genome – especially with regard to the disputable parents' right to shape a genome of their offspring. The first part of the thesis presents transhumanist thinking, which is largely based on individualism and demand of personal rights. The second part of the thesis presents Habermas' criticism of biotechnologies in terms of undesirable social impacts through the interpretation of his essential arguments. The third part contains an assessment of the dispute through a systematically explained argumentation of both concerned sides. In the last part, a contextual assessment of contemporary society is formulated, which can be viewed through the ideological irreconcilability of the presented conflicting opinions.
