Marital status and health

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je nalezení a průzkum vztahu mezi rodinným stavem a zdravím. Dle informací získaných z dostupných studií rodinný stav může významně ovlivňovat zdravotní chovaní a zvyky jedinců, a jako následek ovlivňuje i zdraví celkem. Práce je rozdělena na čtyři části a začíná popisem struktury obyvatelstva České republiky. Dále je vymezen pojem rodinný stav, popsané kategorie rodinného stavu a determinanty zdraví. Kapitola o stavu poznaní obsahuje přehled existující odborné literatury včetně výzkumu na území České republiky. Součásti teorie je též popis kauzálního a selektivního přístupů k řešení daného tématu. Zdrojem dat použitých v této práci je soubor easySHARE, který je zjednodušenou verzí souboru SHARE. Databáze je zdarma přístupná pro výzkumníky a studenty. Analýza byla provedena pomocí softwaru SPSS. Zpočátku byl pomocí kontingenčních tabulek prozkoumán vztah mezi rodinným stavem a osmi vybranými faktory zdraví a souvislost byla následně prokázána. Dále se metodou binární logistické regrese kontrolovalo, zda rodinný stav zůstane významný i po přidáni dalších vysvětlujících proměnných. Díky souhrnnému modelu se zjistilo, že rodinný stav má významnost téměř ve všech případech. Na konci analytické části byl vytvořen model binární logistické regrese s vysvětlovanou proměnnou „subjektivní hodnocení zdraví“. Tento model prokázal, že proměnná „rodinný stav“ má vliv na subjektivní hodnocení zdraví, avšak významné změny se vyskytly pouze v rámci kategorií „sezdaní“ a „ovdovělí“. Poslední kapitolou práce je diskuze, součástí které jsou také limitace práce.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to find and research the relationship between marital status and health. According to information obtained from available studies, marital status can significantly affect the health behavior and habits of individuals, and as a result, it could also affect health. The work is divided into four parts and begins with a description of the population structure of the Czech Republic. Next part contains the description of marital status, categories of marital status and determinants of health are defined. The chapter on the state of knowledge contains an overview of the existing professional literature, including researches in the Czech Republic. Part of the theory is also a description of causal and selective approaches to solving the problematics. The source of data used in this work is easySHARE database, which is a simplified version of the SHARE. The database is accessible free of charge for researchers and students. The analysis was performed using SPSS software. Initially, the relationship between marital status and eight selected health factors was examined using contingency tables, and the relationship was subsequently demonstrated. Furthermore, using the method of binary logistic regression, it was checked whether the marital status remained significant even after the addition of other explanatory variables. Marital status was found to be significant in almost all cases. At the end of the analytical part, a binary logistic regression model was created with the dependent variable "self-perceived health". The model showed that the variable "marital status" has an effect on the self-perceived health, but significant changes occurred only within the categories "married" and "widowed". The last chapter of the thesis is a discussion, which also includes limitations of study.
