Evaluation of ethological behaviour of a selected horse breed

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce je zhodnotit etologické projevy koní u vybraného plemene. Pro tuto práci byli vybráni poníci shetlandského plemene, protože jsou celoročně venku na pastvinách a dá se u nich lépe vypozorovat jejich přirozené chování. Diplomová práce je zaměřená obecně na etologické projevy koní a dále se zaměřuje na mateřské chování. Sledované životní projevy byly hodnoceny v jednotlivých ročních období. Mateřské chování se následně zaměřuje na vitalitu hříbat po porodu. Celkem bylo pozorováno 20 dospělých jedinců a 18 hříbat od narození až do odstavu a prodeje. Na základě zjištěných výsledků lze konstatovat, že starší stádo kobyl mělo více vitálních hříbat, než stádo mladší. V životních projevech se nejvíce objevoval: příjem krmení (53 % ze sledované části dne), odpočinek (15 %) a pohyb (10 %) s příjmem vody (10 %). Ostatní projevy se měnily v závislosti na ročním období. Porod trval průměrně 30 minut. Mezi vybrané životní projevy po porodu byly vybrány: první hlasový projev, který byl průměrně zjištěn ve 14. minutě. Dále to bylo stoupnutí ve 36. minutě, sání v 59. minutě a kálení ve 110. minutě. Jedná se o průměrné hodnoty, které se u jednotlivých hříbat lišily. Bylo to z důvodu možné genetiky jedince, počasí nebo chování matky. Dále se práce zaměřuje na hierarchii dvou stád kobyl. U obou stád se na nejnižší příčce hierarchie objevovaly kobyly, které do stáda přišly jako poslední. V mladším stádě se na nejvyšší příčce hierarchie vyskytovala nejdominantnější a nejstarší kobyla. U staršího stáda se objevila výjimka, kde podle dominance byla na nejvyšší příčce hierarchie mladší kobyla, která ovšem nerozhodovala o pohybu stáda. O tom rozhodovala kobyla, která je starší a zkušenější. U kobyl se zjišťovala i říje. Říje se objevovala průměrně 5,8 dní v jednom cyklu. Mezi sledované projevy patří blýskání, zvukové projevy kobyl a odhánění jiných kobyl od hřebce.

Abstract:

The aim of the diploma thesis is to evaluate the ethological behaviour of a selected horse breed. For the purpose of this paper, Shetland ponies were chosen because they are out in the pasture all year round, and thus it is possible to observe their natural behaviour. The diploma thesis is generally focused on the ethological and maternal behaviour of horses. The monitored ethological behaviour was evaluated in the particular seasons. Subsequently, the maternal behaviour focuses on the vitality of the foals after birth. In total, 20 mature ponies and 18 foals were observed from birth to the period of weaning and sale. Based on the results, it can be stated that the herd with the old mares had more vital foals than the herd with the younger subjects. The most frequent ethological behaviour during the observed days was: feed (53 %), a rest (15 %), and movement (10 %) with a water intake (10 %). Based on the season, the other types of behaviour varied. The birth, on average, lasted for 30 minutes. After the birth, the following ethological behaviour was chosen: the first vocal expression that was detected in the 14th minute, standing up in the 36th minute, sucking in the 59th minute, and excreting in the 110th minute. These average values varied depending on the foal. This was caused by the genetics of the individual subjects, weather conditions, or mother’s behaviour. Furthermore, the thesis focuses on the hierarchy of two herds. The younger herd had the old and most dominant mare at the highest position of the hierarchy. There was an exception when the older herd had the young mare at the highest position in the hierarchy; however, this mare did not control the movement of the herd. It was controlled by another mare which was older and more experienced. Also, the estrus was investigated. On average, it lasted 5.8 days in one cycle. The observed types of ethological behaviour were: vulvar winking, sounds of mares, and driving other mares away from the stallion.
