Epilepsy as a risk factor of bullying

Abstract:

The primary goal of this bachelor thesis has been to determine if epilepsy is a risk factor of bullying, what influence it has on the relationship with school and whether children with epilepsy are truant more often than healthy children. A group of respondents with epilepsy has been compared to a group of respondents without the disorder. According to the quantitative research executed, the respondents with epilepsy were bullied more often (51%) than the respondents not suffering from the condition (34%). The most frequent reason for bullying of children with epilepsy was epilepsy itself (37%). The second most frequent cause was different look and behaviour. Based on the analysis of a questionnaire I have shown that the respondents with epilepsy have more negative relationship to school which is caused mostly by fear of failure, fear of bullying and the lack of friends. This contributes to higher rate of truancy of the respondents with epilepsy. Another finding is that the respondents with epilepsy display less aggressive behaviour (mental or physical) than the healthy respondents. The recommendations for future practice that result from this research can contribute to education quality increase for children with special educational needs, in particular for those with epilepsy.

Abstract:

Hlavným cieľom mojej bakalárskej práce bolo zistiť, či je epilepsia rizikovým faktorom vzniku šikany, aký vplyv má epilepsia na vzťah detí ku škole, a či sa deti s epilepsiou dopúšťajú záškoláctva častejšie ako ich zdraví rovesníci. Porovnávala som jedincov s epilepsiou a intaktných jedincov. Na základe môjho kvantitatívneho výskumu boli respondenti s epilepsiou šikanovaní častejšie (51%) ako respondenti bez epilepsie (34%). Najčastejšou príčinou šikany u respondentov s epilepsiou bola samotná epilepsia (37%), druhou najčastejšou príčinou bol odlišný vzhľad a správanie. Na základe analýzy dotazníka som dokázala, že respondenti s epilepsiou mali negatívnejší vzťah ku škole ako intaktní respondenti, ktorý je spôsobený hlavne strachom z neúspechu, šikany a nedostatkom priateľov. Toto všetko sa taktiež podieľa na tom, že respondenti s epilepsiou sa dopúšťali záškoláctva častejšie ako ich zdraví rovesníci. Ďalším zistením bolo, že respondenti s epilepsiou sa agresívnych prejavov (či už fyzických, či psychických) dopúšťali menej často ako respondenti bez epilepsie. Odporúčania do praxe, ktoré vyplynuli z tejto práce sa môžu prispieť k zlepšeniu kvality vzdelávania detí so špeciálnymi vzdelávacími potrebami, najmä detí s epilepsiou.
