Additional Pedagogical Education as a Prerequisite for Entering the Profession: Prestige of the Teaching Profession and Self-Efficacy

Anotácia:

Predkladaná dizertačná práca sa zaoberá frekventantmi doplňujúceho vzdelávania v oblasti pedagogických vied (ďalej CŽV), ich učiteľským self-efficacy a vnímanou prestížou učiteľského povolania. V rámci práce boli stanovené tri hlavné výskumné ciele. Prvý hlavný výskumný cieľ bol pre české prostredie adaptovať vhodný a v zahranićí využívaný nástroj na meranie učiteľskej self-efficacy. Na základe rešerše literatúry bol zvolený nástroj NTSES. Druhým hlavným cieľom bolo vytvoriť a overiť nástroj na meranie vnímanej prestíže učiteľského povolania, založený na literatúrou podložených zdrojoch prestíže. Tretí hlavný výskumný cieľ bolo zistiť, ako sa absolventi CŽV cítia byť pripravení na špecifické situácie v učiteľskej profesii a ako vnímajú prestíž profesie, do ktorej sa rozhodli vstúpiť. Metodologické kroky zahŕňali jazykovú a kultúrnu adaptáciu nástroja NTSES a jeho následné štatistické overenie prostredníctvom konfirmačnej faktorovej analýzy (CFA) a McDonaldovho omega. CFA potvrdila teoretický, šesť-faktorový model a McDonaldovo omega dosahovalo vysokých hodnôt. Tvorba troj-faktorového nástroja na meranie prestíže učiteľského povolania prebiehala v súlade s doporučenými postupmi a jeho overenie prostredníctvom CFA preukázalo hraničné, no akceptovateľné hodnoty. McDonaldovo omega dosahovalo dobrých hodnôt. Pre tretí hlavný výskumný cieľ som zvolil zmiešaný, sekvenčný výskumný dizajn, s dvoma kvantitatívnymi meraniami a jedným kolom kvalitatívneho zberu dát. Metódy zberu dát boli dotazník tvorený z dvoch vyššie spomínaných výskumných škál a hĺbkové pološtrukturované rozhovory, založené na analýze dát z kvantitatívneho šetrenia. Výskumný súbor tvorili frekventanti CŽV na viacerých univerzitách ponúkajúcich tento typ študijného programu. Prvé meranie prebehlo pri vstupe frekventantov do programu (n= 152) a druhé pri ukončení ich štúdia (n= 47). Výskumný súbor v kvalitatívnej časti pozostával z účastníkov kvantitatívneho merania, ktorí prejavili ochotu participovať na rozhovoroch (n=6). Pre štatistickú analýzu dát som využíval deskriptívne štatistiky a neparametrické analýzy, ktoré zodpovedajú typu dát. Kvalitatívna analýza prebiehala v softvéri Atlas.ti a bola inšpirovaná princípmi zakotvenej teórie. Výsledky poukazujú na nízku mieru učiteľskej self-efficacy v oblasti zvládania kázne a motivácie študentov k učeniu sa. Nízka miera self-efficacy bola bez signifikantného nárastu po ukončení programu. Vnímaná prestíž sa líši medzi dvoma skupinami frekventantov – tí, ktorí majú učiteľstvo ako prirodzený výber kariéry, vnímajú povolanie prestížnejšie než tí, pre ktorých je učiteľstvo záložným plánom. Absolvovanie CŽV sa nijak neprejavilo na vnímaní prestíže učiteľského povolania. Výsledky aj limity sú diskutované v kontexte medzinárodnej literatúry a teoretických východísk.

Abstract:

The presented dissertation examines participants of additional pedagogical education programmes in pedagogical sciences (hereinafter APE), their teacher self-efficacy, and the perceived prestige of the teaching profession. The research was structured around three primary objectives. The first objective was to adapt a suitable internationally utilised instrument for measuring teacher self-efficacy in the Czech context, selecting the NTSES tool based on a literature review. The second aim was to create and validate a tool for measuring the perceived prestige of the teaching profession, based on literature-supported sources of prestige. The third objective was to assess how APE graduates perceive their preparedness for specific teaching situations and their perception of the prestige of the profession they chose to enter. The methodological steps involved the linguistic and cultural adaptation of the NTSES tool and its subsequent statistical validation through confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and McDonald's omega. CFA confirmed the theoretical six-factor model, and McDonald's omega showed high reliability. The creation of the three-factor tool for measuring the prestige of the teaching profession followed recommended procedures, and its validation through CFA demonstrated borderline but acceptable values, with McDonald's omega indicating good reliability. For the third objective, a mixed sequential research design was chosen, incorporating two rounds of quantitative measurement and one round of qualitative data collection. Data collection methods included a questionnaire composed of the two aforementioned research scales and in-depth semi-structured interviews based on quantitative data analysis. The research sample consisted of APE participants from multiple universities offering this type of study programme. The first measurement took place upon the participants' entry into the programme (n = 152), and the second at the completion of their studies (n = 47). The qualitative research sample comprised participants from the quantitative phase who expressed willingness to participate in interviews (n = 6). For statistical data analysis, descriptive statistics and non-parametric analyses were used, appropriate to the type of data. Qualitative analysis was conducted using Atlas.ti software and was inspired by the principles of grounded theory. The results indicate a low level of teacher self-efficacy in managing classroom discipline and motivating students, with no significant improvement observed upon programme completion. Perceived prestige differed between two groups of participants – those for whom teaching was a natural career choice viewed the profession as more prestigious than those who saw teaching as a backup plan. Participation in the APE programme had no effect on the perceived prestige of the teaching profession. The results and limitations are discussed in the context of international literature and theoretical frameworks.
