Jakob Wassermann's "Der Fall Maurizius" - an Analysis

Abstract:

This work is an analysis of Jakob Wassermanns most famous novel Der Fall Maurizius. This formerly glorious twentieth century Jewish author was at the top of his artistic career in the 20s he was sheer photographer of human destinies not their painter, therefore was no artist either. Because Maurizius is not so boring, in comparison with Thomas Manns Zauberberg, it can still find its readers. However, as far as the literary quality is concerned, theres a great difference... Maybe it was the not very flattering review by Hans Mayer, which contributed to forgetting Jakob Wassermanns work too. My primary aim was to depict Jakob Wassermanns unprecedented narrative endowment and also to show, that even photographer can become highly appreciated artist. The analysis follows Ebenhard Lammerts Typology, which stems from a time frame of the story and which examines structures of time, place, characters and speech. Everywhere, where I had opportunity of comparison with other novels this author wrote, or with autobiographic parallels, I took this into account and included them into my work

Abstract:

Tato práce je analýzou nejznámjšího románu, kdysi slavného židovského autora dvacátých let dvacátého století, Jakoba Wassermanna: "Der Fall Maurizius" ...Byl pouhým fotografem lidských osud ne jejich malíem, a proto taky žádným umlcem. Maurizius sice není ve srovnaí s Zauberbergem Thomase Manna tak nudný a proto si mže i v budoucnu najít své tenáe, co se ovšem literární kvality této knihy týe, to už je jiná otázka... Možná i tato nepíliš lichotivá kritika Hanse Mayera, pispla k zapomenutí díla Jakoba Wassermanna. Za cíl jsem si kladl nartnuti nebývalého vypravského talentu Jakoba Wassermanna a tím ukázat, že i fotograf mže být právem uznávaným umlecem. Analýza se ídí Typologií Ebenharda Lammerta, která vycházi asového rámce píbhu a zkoumá struktury asu, místa, postav a eci. Všude tam kde se nabízelo srovnání s jinými romány tohoto autora a nebo autobiografické paralely, bylo toto zohlednno a zalenno do práce.
