The German First Names – Summary of Trends in name-giving from the Middle Ages to the Present

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the development of the first names in German-speaking countries – namely from the Middle Ages to the present. So in the thesis there are described several important periods: at first the Teutonic names are defined, followed by the development in the Middle Ages. In this period the formation of names involves Christianity in particular as well as the impact of foreign names which is evident even in the late Middle Ages. We get up gradually to the present, there is also a comparison of the most popular names in different countries. In the last chapter there are rules clarified that parents should follow when they choose names for their offspring. This thesis offers so a broad view of the fundamental trends of first names.

Abstract:

Tato magisterská diplomová práce se zabývá vývojem křestních jmen v německy mluvících zemích – a to od středověku až po současnost. Je zde tudíž zachyceno několik důležitých období: nejprve jsou popsána germánská jména, poté následuje vývoj křestních jmen ve středověku, kdy se na jejich tvorbě podílí zejména křesťanství stejně jako vliv cizích jmen, který je zřejmý i v pozdním středověku. Postupně se tak dostáváme až do současnosti, nechybí zde ani srovnání aktuálně nejoblíbenějších jmen v různých zemích. V poslední kapitole jsou objasněna pravidla, která by rodiče měli dodržet při volbě jména pro své potomky. Práce tak nabízí široký pohled na základní vývojové tendence křestních jmen.
