Words removed from dictionaries and archaic words: about ephemerality in lexis

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with words removed from the annual reissues of the French monolingual printed dictionaries Le Petit Larousse and Le Petit Robert. The main aim of the thesis is to study the dynamics of changes in their nomenclatures between 2012 and 2021. Two possible reasons for the removal of words are analysed: the economy of space on the page and the temporal feature of a lexical item in the dictionary, where its ephemerality or archaic nature leads to a natural renewal of the captured reference lexicon. Methodologically, the paper builds on previous research by C. Martinez published in 2015, where removed words from the same dictionaries were similarly analysed between 1997 and 2012. Martinez's metalexicographic corpus DiCo was used for comparison. The removed lexemes were than manually verified in printed dictionaries and their actual use in language was researched in several types of corpora of written French. After evaluating the results of the first hypothesis, we found out that the tendencies observed already in the period studied by Martinez continue between 2012 and 2021. For the second hypothesis, it was confirmed that the words removed from dictionaries are not archaisms in most cases and that the supposed ephemerality of the words in question consist mainly in their short stay in dictionary nomenclatures.

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá slovy vyřazenými z každoročních reedic francouzských jednojazyčných tištěných slovníků Le Petit Larousse a Le Petit Robert. Hlavním cílem práce je zkoumat dynamiku změn v jejich nomenklaturách mezi lety 2012 a 2021. Analyzovány jsou dva možné důvody vyřazování slov – úspora místa na stránce a časový příznak lexika ve slovníku, kdy jeho efemérnost nebo archaičnost vede k přirozené obměně zachycované referenční slovní zásoby. Práce metodologicky navazuje na předchozí výzkum C. Martineze publikovaný v roce 2015, kde byla obdobně analyzována vyřazená slova z týchž slovníků mezi lety 1997 a 2012. Pro srovnání byl použit Martinezův metalexikografický korpus DiCo a následně byly vyřazené lexémy manuálně ověřovány ve slovnících. Jejich reálné využití pak bylo zkoumáno v několika typech jazykových korpusů psané francouzštiny. Po zhodnocení výsledků první hypotézy bylo zjištěno, že tendence pozorované již v období zkoumaném Martinezem dále pokračují i mezi lety 2012 a 2021. U druhé hypotézy bylo potvrzeno, že slova vyřazená ze slovníků nejsou ve většině případů archaismy a že domnělá efemérnost daných slov spočívá především v jejich krátkém setrvání v nomenklaturách slovníků.
