Social Rejection, Marginalization and Inclusion as underlying themes in children’s novels about characters with physical disabilities

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá otázkou užívání literárních textů jakožto užitečnou učební pomůckou a prostředkem, jehož prostřednictvím je možné přenášet na žáky či s nimi sdílet pozitivní výchovné a společenské vzory. Práce se nejdříve zabývá myšlenkou morálního potenciálu knih a literatury a zkoumá, zdali je možné ho ve výuce anglického jazyka rozvinout a jakým způsobem. Dále zjišťuje, jaká kritéria by měla knihy splňovat, aby žáky zaujala, bavila a měla tak na ně ten správný vliv. V diplomové práci se dále řeší také to, do jaké míry může literatura dítě či mladého dospělého skutečně ovlivnit. Poté se práce věnuje tématu postižení v literatuře a zkoumá, jaký dopad má toto stále spíše kontroverzní téma na čtenáře. Část práce také vysvětluje, co to je realistická fikce a zmiňuje, jaký účel mají plnit knihy spadající pod tento žánr. Hlavní část díla je určena analýze témat sociálního odmítnutí dítěte vrstevníky, jeho vyloučení z majoritní společnosti a také se naopak zaobírá i tématem inkluze. Jmenované společenské fenomény jsou zkoumány v rámci tří románů o školácích trpících fyzickým postižením za účelem předvést, jestli a případně jaký mají tyto knihy výchovný potenciál ve školní třídě.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the issue of using literary texts as a useful and meaningful teaching aid and as a medium through which positive educative examples can be transferred. Firstly, the work occupies itself with a concept of ethical potential of books and literature in today’s classrooms. It comments on the appropriate book-selection and deals with the question of to what extend can classroom reading influence its readers. How the theme of disability is introduced to pupils and what might be the impact of such topic on children and young adults is also discussed. The work even takes a closer look at what the genre of realistic fiction is and comments on its purpose. The main part occupies itself with the analysis of themes of social and peer rejection, marginalization and inclusion as they are presented and used in three fictional novels about characters with physical disabilities and on its bases tries to examine the classroom potential of these literary texts.
